And it indeed holds true when you stay at Southeast Asia’s first Hotel Indigo, located on Wireless Road, Bangkok. They don’t just welcome you to the hotel; they welcome you to the entire neighbourhood. By Adam Kerr.
The lobby itself is impressive; a lounge area filled with objects and furniture of yesteryears that have been carefully refurbished for the hotel. As part of the hotel’s philosophy, many different aspects and places of the neighbourhood – all within 5km of the hotel – have been woven into the hotel’s design, food and beverage, amenities and services. As you walk towards the lift lobby, you’ll see an installation of even more old school radios, telephones, amps, guitars and other electronics, all beautifully displayed as an homage to Wireless Road’s music and radio history and the birthplace of Thailand’s first radio station. You’re welcome to fiddle with them as long as you don’t break them (they’re obviously not working anymore).
Head up to your room and you’ll realise the corridors have ceiling fans in place of air conditioners. Apart from the lobby and the rooms (thank goodness), the rest of the hotel is open air to brighten the interior with natural light. You can even take a breath of fresh air at the vertical sky gardens in the corridors, the hotel’s way of bringing the nearby Lumpini Park (it’s only a 10-minute walk away) closer to you. They’ve even splashed the walls with street art-style murals that tell the story of the neighbourhood.
This 192-room hotel is great for anyone who loves art, design and local exploration, especially since you can easily speak to the “neighbourhood hosts” about the area. They’ll make you feel right at home with their genuine Thai hospitality and their knowledge of nearby restaurants, art galleries, parks, shopping malls and cultural landmarks. You’re even welcome to join Oliver Horn, the General Manager for a run at Lumpini Park every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am.
