Nothing says summer more than a sundress and a wide-rimmed hat, and if you’ve already got those checked off your list (with sunscreen, of course), how about this: espadrilles that feel as breezy as they look. Spanish brand Castañer gives us way more sophisticated options, with the popular footwear brand finally arriving on our shores. as part of the revamped Ngee Ann City wing.

The new boutique – the first in Southeast Asia – is an extension of a family-run brand that’s founded in 1927 by Luis Castañer and his cousin Tomàs Serra, best known for crafting quality espadrilles.

As for the construction of the footwear itself, each shoe goes through a thorough process. It starts with the colouring and reeling of the jute thread, which is then woven into a braid and brought together on the spinning table to create a sole shape. The sole is then vulcanised with rubber to protect it and make it stronger. After putting different pieces of fabric together, they are then stitched by hand to the sole.

Techniques aside, the brand is always updated with seasonal trends as well. This year’s summer collection is inspired by the Memphis movement, hence the bold and colourful tones such as reddish orange and lemon yellow, as well as 50s beachwear, seen in nautical details, stripes and sandy shades.

The Castañer boutique is located at Takashimaya’s newly revamped Level 3, at Ngee Ann City, #03-14.
