The wonders of cushion makeup, in particular the BB cushion, no longer need any introduction. The Korean beauty industry and all its supporters have already made their case, many times over, for why the cushion is the way to go for complete, glowing coverage and easy, on-the-go touch ups.
The interesting thing is that recently, Amorepacific, the Korean company that owns the cushion technology, has started sharing its proprietary patent with other companies, so we’ve started seeing cushions from the Western brands emerge as well. As more enter the cushion arena, the Koreans have to continue to innovate to keep consumers coming back for more, while the Western brands get into the game and start heating up the competition.
All of this has resulted in a good number of new cushion makeup hitting the market this year, which means consumers like us are the ones who stand to gain the most. Here are the cushions we’ll be adding to our ever-growing collection:
ETUDE HOUSE Precious Mineral Any Cushion Pearl Aura, $32, all ETUDE HOUSE stores from 3 Jul
We know and love ETUDE HOUSE’s Precious Mineral Any Cushion, so this version basically is similar, just that it also adds a… pearl aura. In other words, a brighter finish that makes your skin look like it has been “lightly kissed with powdered pearls”, thanks to the addition of the Precious Mineral Brightener made from black pearl extract.
Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion Brightening, $80, Sulwhasoo store at #01-72/72 Capitol Singapore and Sulwhasoo counters
Similarly, this is the brightening version of the existing Perfecting Cushion, for consumers looking for a more radiant finish. It uses luxurious ingredients like white magnolia blossoms, licorice purifying water and a pearlescent complex made from mother-of-pearl powder and synthetic pearls to both brighten and improve the complexion in the long term.
Lancôme Blanc Expert Cushion Compact SPF 23/PA++, $20 for case and $55 for the cushion review, Lancôme counters
Lancôme is one of the first Western brands to put their take on the cushion technology, and their version promises the typical functions of brightening thanks to the pine extract, and moisturising by the emollient agents. The gel texture promises to add a blurring effect as well.
LANEIGE Cushion Highlighter, $34, LANEIGE boutiques and counters
Yes, even highlighters come in cushion form now. This one comes with coloured micro-particles that moisturise that skin on top of adding “hydro radiance”: the term for the iconic K-beauty complexion trend that everyone wants. Just pat it on the cheekbone area, just like how you would apply a regular blusher. It also works for contouring and highlighting around the T-zone.
ETUDE HOUSE Cushion Blusher, $18, ETUDE HOUSE stores
Cushion blushers are really the inevitable follow up to the BB Cushion (cushion lip colours next, maybe?). We really like these ETUDE HOUSE ones for their girly colour and packaging, and how it has the consistency of a liquid blush, but a lot easier to apply thanks to the cushion.
And one more to look out for: an upcoming Dior cushion
Just last month, Amorepacific signed a memorandum of understanding with Dior, allowing the French luxury brand to make use of the cushion technology for its products. This means we should be seeing a Dior cushion hitting the market pretty soon, further expanding the selection of Western cushions. The more, the merrier, we say.
