You can delete all those square-ready photo apps from your phone as you won’t be needing them anymore, now that Instagram has just announced via the Instagram blog that their latest update will support both landscape and portrait formats in addition to the existing squares. According to the blogpost, “It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram…” We’re glad they finally realised this and make this significant change in what we’d say is the biggest Instagram update since videos were introduced.

The update applies to videos too, and according to Instagram, this will now allow for a more exciting viewing experience, since widescreen videos can now be uploaded. The filter functions have also been adjusted, such that both images and videos now share the same sets of filters, and filter intensity can also be tweaked on videos.

The Instagram version 7.5 update is now available for download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play store.
