September 10, 2015

“Lately I’ve been losing sleep, dreaming about the things that we could be.” OneRepublic closes last night event with their 2013 hit single, “Counting Stars”. Very apt, might we add. You don’t have to lose sleep wondering what the #AppleEvent will bring because it’s finally unveiled! So in a nutshell, the Apple Event last night unveiled the highly-anticipated iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the all-powerful iPad Pro (with a stylus called the Apple Pencil), an updated Apple TV and… a collab with Hermès for the Apple Watch. We summarise everything you need to know about last night’s #AppleEvent.

iPhone 6s & 6s Plus

So one of the main speculations around the #AppleEvent was the launch of a new iPhone. And true to Apple’s traditions, the well-loved brand introduces the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The features of this baby will make your iPhone 6 seem obsolete, especially with the introduction of 3D Touch, which adds on to the other awesome Touch features that Apple currently has like the Force Touch and Multi-Touch. Also, as expected, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will have 4K video recording capabilities. The only thing that left us puzzled was that they’ll come in the same capacities as the iPhone 6 – 16GB, 64GB and 128GB – which might be a problem if you’re gonna take a lot of 4K videos and a new kind of photo, the Live Photos. Why didn’t they introduce a 512GB option? We don’t know. But we do know that there’s a new colour. Gold Rose, they call it, though we feel like it looks more like bandung-with-too-much-milk pink. Pre-order begins 12 Sept, and will be available in Singapore on 25 Sept.

• 3D Touch
– New way of navigating and experiencing the iPhone
– New gesture – Peek and Pop™ – lets you preview a photo, email, web page or other content. Press deeper to “pop” into the content.
– A little bit of pressure on the edge of the screen lets you peek at your other apps, adding new dimension to multi-tasking
– Gives you shortcuts to the things you use frequently (i.e. press deeper on the camera app to access the selfie function)

• Camera
– 12-megapixel rear-facing camera equipped with sensor that has advanced pixel technology and proprietary image signal processor for truer colours, sharper images and faster auto-focus
– 5-megapixel FaceTime® HD front camera and Retina Flash
– 4K video recording capabilities with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, delivering 8 million pixels
– Live Photos: images you capture like any other, with the added footage of a few seconds before or after included (“Live” function on camera app itself), like gifs

• Hardware/Software
– A9 – Apple’s 3rd generation 64-bit chip allows for 70% faster CPU and 90% faster GPU performance than predecessor
– Faster Wi-Fi and LTE Advanced to allow you to browse, download and stream content faster
– Come with the iOS 9

Apple TV

“Apple TV & chill?” is probably going to be buzzing around the Internet for the next few days. As Tim Cook puts it last night, “The future of TV is apps.” The new Apple TV is going to change your experience in the living room with apps built for the television, allowing you to pick what you want to watch and when you want to watch it. Also, the Apple TV remote features Siri, so you can literally talk to it and ask for what you want to watch. One of the cool things about that is, when you’re watching a TV show or a movie, and you didn’t catch what the actor said, you can simply ask Siri, “What did she say?” and it’ll rewind the clip back a few seconds to replay that part. Coming soon to Singapore, though it was mentioned last night that it’ll be available in October.

Apple Watch x Hermès

Yes. Apple introduced the new Apple Watch Hermès collection, a combination of the Apple Watch in stainless steel paired with fine crafted leather bands in the iconic styling of Hermès, including the Single Tour, Double Tour and Cuff.  “Apple and Hermès make very different products, but they reflect the deep appreciation of quality design,” said Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “Both companies are motivated by a sincere pursuit of excellence and the desire to create something that is not compromised. Apple Watch Hermès is a true testament to that belief.”

Each stainless steel case across this collection features Hermès signature etching and a customisable face with three exclusive dial designs inspired by the Clipper, Cape Cod and Espace Hermès watches. Available from 5 October at Hermès (Takashimaya Department Store, Level 1 & 2) and Malmaison By The Hour Glass (Knightsbridge Singapore, 270 Orchard Road #01-10). US$1,100-US$1,500.
