September 30, 2015
There’s everything to love about Noise Singapore, due largely to their dedication to emerging local artists and musicians, and this year, it’s no different. Perhaps, even more spectacular, and that’s because they turn 10.
In order to have something befitting of a milestone birthday, expect a whole line-up of exhibitions and concerts, happening all the way till 8 November, including an Alumni Concert and Arts Market that runs just beside it. Here, we’ll give you a run-down of what not to miss. After all, they’re completely free.
1. Festival Exhibition
When: 16 Sep – 11 Oct 2015, 10am – 9pm
Where: ION Orchard, B4
You might have already seen this while dining at Itacho or hanging around Muji, but the anchor exhibition will still be running until mid-October. It’s a chance for local artists to submit their work, everything from art, design to photography, under the Open Categories, and have it displayed prominently alongside equally creative peers.
2. The Apprenticeship Programme (TAP) Exhibition: “c. 2015 -“
When: 19 Sep – 11 Oct 2015, 12pm – 7pm (till 4pm on Sunday, closed on Mon and PH)
Where: DECK (120a Prinsep Street) ; Chapel Gallery, Objectifs – Centre for Photography & Film
These 34 young artists from the TAP programme are handpicked, groomed, and after four months of guidance from industry professionals, they finally get to display their work across these two venues, with a unifying theme of the self in relation to time. The one at the Objectifs gallery displays visual art piece and installations, all the more intriguing, thanks to the ingenious use of slanted mirrors throughout the exhibition. At the DECK, we get photography pieces, as well as a digital collage and wax body parts installation, meant to melt as the exhibition progresses. There are even weekend tours on 3 Oct, 4 Oct, 10 Oct and 11 Oct, from 2pm at Objectifs. Each tour runs for about 1.5 hours and will take you to both venues.
3. The Music Mentorship Concerts
When: 2 Oct – 4 Oct
Where: Esplanade Outdoor Theatre and Concourse
18 young bands and musicians are set to perform their hearts out at this three-day event, after four months of keen mentorship by local music veterans – and it’s all original music, mind you. They include Canvas Conversations, ZeeAura, The MadHatter Project, and Faux Pas, among many others. If you’re interested to find out what local music is like, or in need of new listening material, this one’s for you.
4. Noise Alumni Exhibition: “Becoming Of Age”
When: 24 Oct – 8 Nov 2015, 11am – 8pm
Where: Galeris Nila & Utama @ The Foothills at Fort Canning Park (opposite Liang Court)
Of course, they’re celebrating this milestone with a special exhibition where 20 former TAP artists bring together works that talk about the constant evolution of the environment around them, which can be interpreted in many different ways.
5. Noise Alumni Concerts & Art Markets
When: 30 – 31 Oct 2015, 5pm – 11pm
Where: Lawn @ The Foothills at Fort Canning Park (opposite Liang Court)
Finally, the highlight of the entire season – these alumni concerts feature well-known local acts such as iNCH, ShiGGa Shay, Take That, wyd;syd and The Summer State, and with so much talent gathered in one area, you’d be crazy to sit this one out. There are also over 80 stalls put together by The Local People, and if you come dressed up on 31 Oct (it’s Halloween, after all), you might win $100 shopping vouchers as the Best Dressed festival-goer.
