If you’re still in mourning after Jamaica Blue shut its doors to patrons earlier this year at Star Vista, well, you’ve got something else coming your way. Burritos are not new in Singapore, but they’re certainly on the way to becoming the next #foodporn trend here. It’s as though everyone suddenly grew a taste for Mexican food, though we’re really not complaining because hey, more Mexican food joints for us!
Guzman y Gomez™ (or affectionately known by regulars as GYG™) is opening their third outlet – and one that’s finally in the heartlands – at Star Vista on 31 October; and as part of the Mexican chain’s tradition, they’ll be giving out free burritos and burrito bowls that are prepared fresh and made to order from 12pm-5pm. If you’re unfamiliar with the menu, pick from a variety of quality cuts of grilled chicken and steak, slow-roasted beef and pork, sautéed barramundi, marinated in their signature Chipotle or Guerrero marinade, or a vegetarian filling; all nicely stuffed into a warm tortilla (or in a bowl if you’re gluten-free) with rice, vegetarian black beans, cheese and fresh salsa (please note that it’s only one burrito or burrito bowl per person and there won’t be other food items available on Free Burrito Day).
Singaporeans being Singaporeans, you can expect a long queue. But to keep you entertained (and fed), GYG™ has invited a live Mariachi band from Mexico to perform while you munch on their guacamole and corn chips in the line. You could also get into the spirit Halloween and get your face painted if you like. The 60-man crew will do their best, and at the same time, they hope to break the current record of dishing out 6,360 free burritos and bowls; a record currently held by GYG Robina Town Centre (Australia). They produced a made-to-order burrito every 8 seconds, for a good 10 hours. Madness!
Guzman y Gomez™ is opens at The Star Vista (#01-32) on 31 Oct. More info here.
Opening hours: 10am-9.30pm daily
