Yep, we’re putting it out there – they’re that good. We’re talking about hearty, comfort food in the middle of the busy CBD area, and casual lunch-time joint Grain Traders is definitely all about that.
The founders, Javier Perez of the Kilo branch of restaurants, and experienced designer Ken Yuktasevi, have their novel approach written right into one of their taglines, “Slow Food, Real Fast”, hence this fast-dining concept that still deals with wholesome food. You can opt for an easy take away, or better still, dine with friends within the calm oasis of their restaurant. That means an open kitchen where everything is freshly cooked on the spot, and where all the labels on the food are informative.
“We didn’t want people to simply pick a grain, a protein, a green, and so on and so forth. We want to let them know what they’re really getting and where it comes from,” says Ken. With a focus on hearty, quality food and a place you can delight in with good company, the brand really hopes to inspire a lunch movement that encourages people “to treat themselves right, even for just an hour each day”. Or, as expressed by our favourite duo from Parks & Recreation, it’s time to Treat Yo Self.
Each bowl goes for $16, and while at the counter, you get to choose from six categories:
- Grains (quinoa, brown rice, soba noodles, super greens, etc)
- Proteins (grilled striploin steak, lentils patty, sous-vide & chargrilled salmon etc)
- Veggies (roasted butternut squash & sweet potato, grilled beets & carrots, wild mushrooms etc)
- Cold Veggies (wafu tomato, apple kimchi, mixed bean pico de gallo etc)
- Toppings (roasted nuts, crispy garlic & shallots etc)
- Sauces (coconut curry, miso caramel, basil vinaigrette etc)
In other words, you’re guaranteed to spend a long time deliberating on what to order, so if you’re the organised sort, you might want to head to their website to pick your options first.
