The descent into Johannesburg’s International Airport reveals the South Africa of popular imagination: rolling grassland studded with trees, interrupted only by the occasional red-dirt road or low-slung village. Sure enough, it doesn’t take much of a drive beyond Johannesburg’s suburbs to spot giraffes nibbilng on trees in a game reserve. But this wasn’t that kind of trip. instead, this was a journey into the wilds of urban South Africa, where a blossoming of creative energy is reshaping neighbourhoods that wre long ago give up for dead.
