Elton John All The Hits Tour 2015Tue 1 Dec 2015: You have to give it to the man — Elton John is a performer. He delivered 24 songs (many of them dragged out with extensive musical outros), all while nursing a cold (he informed the audience after the third song). His back-to-back All The Hits tour has seen him take the stage in Osaka, Yokohama, Wellington, Hong Kong, It’aewŏn-dong, and Bangkok over the past two weeks, before he made his way to Singapore for a two-night concert at The Star Theatre.

This is the third time I’ve seen Elton perform in Singapore, and his set list hasn’t changed much, apart from reshuffling the order of songs. The last two times I caught him at the Singapore Indoor Stadium — and while The Star Theatre is a much newer, cosier venue, it was hard to tell how good the acoustics of the auditorium were, because the sound crew turned the volume up to almost deafening levels. This was one of the loudest concerts I’ve attended (louder than Metallica and Def Leppard, so you can imagine how loud the sound system was), which was a bit of a shame, considering this show was really all about the music.

Elton John All The Hits Tour 2015

Unfortunate decibels aside, Elton gave us the songs we were hoping for (though “Sacrifice” wasn’t in the list). The crowd heartily sang along to “Tiny Dancer”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and “Your Song” — arguably the top three songs of his extensive career. Faster tracks during the long encore like “I’m Still Standing”, “Saturday Night’s Alright” and “Crocodile Rock” saw fans lining the aisles to dance like they didn’t care who was judging. For those who paid close attention to Elton’s vocals, it was quite evident that it has lowered over the years; he sang the high notes on “Daniel” and “Bennie & the jets” an octave lower, while his band provided the upper harmony. But again, you really have to give it to the man — Elton John is 68 this year, and has been pushing his vocals with non-stop touring.

But have no regrets — if an Elton John concert is on your bucket list, tonight’s the night to go, because considering the many times he has already been here and his age, we don’t know if we’ll see him on our small island again. This final night might be The One.

Elton John performs a second night at The Star Theatre on Wed 2 Dec 2015. Tickets are available from Sistic.
