We can’t think of a footwear brand more tropical climate-appropriate than Melissa. Nothing helps us function better in high heat and humidity than shoes made from a jelly material that’s also soft on the feet; and we also like how Melissa makes jelly shoes in all kinds of designs so even dressing up for nights out doesn’t always have to mean squeezing our feet into uncomfortable shoes.

And of course, we consider them a summer staple. It might be a bit difficult to think about a Spring/Summer 2016 wardrobe at a time when the Christmas lights just went up, but these Melissas are putting us in the right mood already. The Spring/Summer 2016 collection is named Wanna Be Carioca – “Carioca” is a Brazilian term that refers to anything related to the city of Rio de Janeiro – so we can expect the pieces to be similarly lively. We mean an appropriately summery palette of turquoise, coral and yellow, anchored by classics like black, white and blush; in terms of shape, it’s all about keeping your toes (thankfully) ventilated with open-toed sandals and lots of straps.

The collection has plenty to choose from, but it’s these 3 styles in particular we’re looking to to anchor our summer shoe wardrobe:

Wanna Be Rio, $235

Melissa Wanna Be Rio 31678-52839 Orange-Brown

It’s a style that’s kind of unexpected: an Oxford lace-up, but on a flatform sole with open toes. Think of that as East-meets-West: elements of the British-style Oxford shoe with the flatform sole reminiscent of traditional Japanese slippers.

Mar, $155

Melissa Mar 31686-01690 Blue

You can’t go wrong with the Mar sandal – it gives all of the height plus all of the comfort. The sole is nicely cushioned as well, so this is the kind of shoe you can walk (and even run) around all day in.

Good Vibes, $145

Melissa Good Vibes 31677-01276 Light Pink

This takes on the sportswear trend that seems to still be hanging around, with thick elastic straps on a flat pointed sandal. We can see it paired with either a casual outfit or even something more dressy – it’s definitely versatile enough. And we’re definitely get it in this shade of blush.
