January 20, 2016
Ahh yes, it’s that time of the year again where we make our annual pilgrimage to The Meadow for St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. It doesn’t matter whether you’re that hipster who says they’re anything but hipster, or the unapologetically mainstream listener because music is music, and this sixth edition is set to get you off your butts to move your body, one way or another (nobody’s gonna judge the way you dance!).
The indie music festival, which originated from Australia, has grown so much, so fast, and at The Meadow at Gardens By The Bay, we can once again gather with the rest of the like-minded appreciators of music to bask in the awesome mix of left-field electronica, intelligent pop, boundary-pushing R&B and other genre-fluid music from the States, Australia, United Kingdom, Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong, and of course, Singapore.
This year’s stellar line-up sees the return of Baltimore dream pop duo, Beach House, who recently dropped not one, but two studio albums last year. We’ll also be in the presence of one of Australia’s biggest export, Flume, who’ll be bringing his A-game in the form of new material from his highly-anticipated second LP (slated for release this year). And how can we forget the ever-so-cute-but-witty Canadian “warrior poet”, Grimes? Her last album, “Art Angels” was a fearless inventive piece of work.
On the local side of things, the boys from Cashew Chemists bring their brand of the delta blues to a bigger stage for everyone to soak up while Intriguant (real name Louis Quek) slows down the pace, keeping it all chill with downtempo and fragile beats fused with a spectrum of influences ranging from electronica and glitch, to soul and hip hop. And the last homegrown act that’ll be proudly flying our flag is none other than Riot !n Magenta, who has been making waves in the past year after releasing their four-track EP, “Voices”.
Plus, just yesterday, the Laneway Festival organisers just gave us a nice surprise, by announcing a brand new stage, the fourth one, at this year’s festival. Set up with local collective Syndicate, we can expect local and international electronic DJs and visual artists, including Australia’s JPS Singapore’s Mean, Fauxe, and visual artist Brandon Tay accompanying duo Kiat & Kane.
Being under the sun for more than 12 hours can be pretty relentless, but when you’re in the company of great friends and strangers who enjoy the same eclectic taste of music as you do (you’ll be surprised at how friendly some of them are), along with all the activity tents set up to help you get your mind off the heat, countless of F&B options to replenish your energy, and of course the music, the wholesome experience you get every year is something you’ll never ever regret. Just remember to bring that bottle of sunscreen because nobody likes to be burnt.
