UD x Gwen

February 15, 2016

In perhaps one of the beauty industry’s most powerful collaborations ever, Urban Decay has teamed up with Gwen Stefani to release a makeup collection that is truly kickass. The 90s darling, who’s recently been spending her time canoodling with country star and fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton, calls the collab a “perfect match”. And with good reason! Considering how both Gwen and UD’s artistic visions revolve around creative self-expression and redefining feminine conventions (in the music industry, and of attitudes towards colour in makeup), we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner.

In fact, UD’s Chief Creative Officer Wende Zomnir, who worked personally with the pop star for the collection, actually met Gwen back in the early days of UD and No Doubt (Gwen’s musical alma mater) – which should also explain all the little tributes to the band within the products. It’s Urban Decay’s first ever celebrity designer collaboration, and boy have they delivered. UD x Gwen have got everything covered – from a blush palette with six versatile shades of blush, bronzer, and highlighter, to a two-shade powder brow kit (complete with tweezers and a magnifying mirror!), to a comprehensive set of lipsticks and lip pencils. Rock Gwen’s signature red lip with your choice of the eight new shades, including a first-ever Mega Matte shade for an insanely pigmented lip in an intense matte finish.

But the eyeshadow palette is easily the star of the whole collection, loaded with Gwen’s 15 must-have shades in a range of neutrals and jewel tones. Of the 15, three comes from the UD shadow collection, while the remaining 12 are all-new colours customised to achieve Gwen’s signature looks.

The No Doubt tributes come hot and heavy – the song title “Magic’s in the Makeup” is stenciled boldly on the palette mirror, and at least three shades are named after No Doubt songs. There’s even a bright metallic gold called 1987 – fondly named in honour of the year No Doubt was formed. Which is what makes things all the more awkward, now that No Doubt has released news that they’ve replaced Gwen – with a guy. And not just any guy; the frontman replacing our platinum blonde punk-rock princess is the lead singer of hardcore scream band AFI. Granted, it’s natural to feel a little iffy when your frontwoman’s solo career has taken off tremendously, but a split was never in the stars for the band. If anything, Gwen’s last public performance with No Doubt was just last October. Whuuut?

For now we’re just as thrown as you are, but here’s hoping dear Blakey’s shoulder to cry on will help weaken the blow. That, and this new bomb UD collection, of course.
