Pubumésu evocates the piquant smells and vibrant settings of Southeast Asia’s culture with its new themed About The Market collection. Inspired by the everyday happenings, surroundings and offerings representative of Southeast Asian wet markets we’re all so familiar with, the collection immortalises cultural traditions and motifs such as the banana leaf and tempeh in a set of super cute and exclusively crafted bags.
You may be distracted by the novel appeal of these bags, but don’t be fooled! Tons of meticulous effort went into crafting these artisanal products; whether it is employing a traditional shadow puppet making technique exclusive to an Indonesian village to assemble thinned out sheets of cattle hide into fans, or working with a leather craftsman to create precise strips of leather stamped with line motifs to mimic those on leaves. We’re in love with the true blue artisanal quality emulated by the collection. It’s so hard to resist the leather fans, which look like they could easily be found in our grandmother’s heritage apartment. We’ll always #supportlocal, but in this case, guess we’ll go big and look out for our friendly neighbours as well.
The Pubumésu Market A/W 2016 collection, $65 – $790. Available at Gallery & Co.
