We find that runway beauty looks, more often than not, oscillate between two extremes. Models are either practically bare-faced to channel that no-makeup look that backstage makeup artists still seem to be so fond of; or on the other end of the spectrum, otherworldly aesthetics for some of the more avant-garde brands, i.e. looks that don’t really translate well into regular daily life.

So when we spot a look that belongs somewhere comfortably in the middle of this spectrum – models are evidently made up, in a way that we could see ourselves copying ourselves – we sit up, and we take notes. And that’s exactly what the Erdem Spring/Summer ’17 show, which took place at the recently-concluded London Fashion Week, made us do.

We immediately fell in love with the orangey tones on the eyes, cheeks and lips. It’s precisely because so many girls would instinctively shy away from the colour, often perceived as too bright or bold for daily wear, that we are so attracted to how the artists managed to transform it into this lovely romantic look for the show.

As Val Garland, makeup artist for NARS, says about the inspiration behind this look: “She’s a 1930s girl whose beauty is inspired by the 1800s. She has just been washed up to shore and her look is romantic, yet haunting, with slightly wet skin.”

Old-school the inspiration may be, but we think the final result works out to be very modern indeed. The flushed cheeks stand out but don’t overpower the rest of the face; and burnt orange on the lips is an unexpected alternative to a neon orange, which might be too much, and it’s also a shade that channels sophistication.

It’s easy to copy this look, and we’ve made it even easier for you by picking out all the necessary tools.
