Our favourite bad girl recently recently launched her Fenty x Puma AW16 collection, and well, since fashion waits for no one, her first ever SS17 collection made its first appearance not so long after. Riri’s pastel sweet aesthetic, which can be evidently seen in her Fenty sliders, held true with this collection which Rihanna has said was inspired by “Marie Antoinette at the gym.”

If past season’s collection was the street savvy “cool girl”, this one’s the wide-eyed sweet sister with a princess complex. But having the iconic French Queen as her muse didn’t stop Riri from further incorporating her usual Japanese-themed styles into her looks. To us, it was more of a decadent Marie Antoinette meets traditional geisha kind of collection where Eastern floral embroidery prevailed against a background of Western-style lace and corsets. With dainty eyelet lace which made up matching jackets and flared trousers, satin corsets and pearls worn with sweatshirts, the collection was a stunning reincarnation of the past, with the slight influx of modern day street attitude. And now we know of a new way to keep cool at the gym; with a pink laced paper fan which reads: PUMA.

Silk lingerie was reinvented and deconstructed in multiple looks with almost rugged, purposefully torn apart seams. Lace-ups became a reoccurring theme throughout the collection, from corsets, to the side panels of silk trousers. And more importantly, unlike her past monochromatic Autumn Winter collection, this one came in a spectrum of pastels! There were, of course, tons of pink, while soft lilac, mint green,  and beige made small appearances here and there. There was also a mix of earthy colours such as military green and rusty brown to add balance and perspective to the edgy street label’s brand. The iconic pieces were most definitely the corsets and laced fans, which we expect to see hit the streets once the collection is launched. Once again, nothing but a standing ovation for Rihanna. Keep on doing you, as long as we keep getting such jaw-droopingly stunning pieces from you.
