You’ve seen them strut down the runway with absolute confidence, sexy and playful at the same time as they wink knowingly at the camera, and with their toned bodies, never-ending legs and shiny, wavy curls — all you can really do is think, well, it’s no wonder they’re Angels. Every year, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a sensation, oddly enough, to guys and girls alike, partly because of the steadily over-the-top wings that the lingerie brand adorns their models with, and partly because we all love to admire this celebration of human perfection. Healthy or not, the world’s just obsessed.
Then, you’ve also probably assumed that the models’ svelte physiques have something to do with a crazy crash diet of, say kale and fresh juice, or a zero-to-hero high-intensity Insanity Workout — none of which we recommend — but you’ll be surprised. Karlie Kloss has a sweet tooth, Jourdan Dunn’s really into Nando’s, and as we found out, some of them don’t even like to work out all that much. For every boxing fanatic Adriana Lima, there’s a girl who’s just like us. “I’ll be the first one to tell you that I really don’t love the act of working out,” says VS Angel Sara Sampaio, like every normal person out there.
The Portuguese model ‘earned her wings’ in 2015, but her modelling career started earlier than that of course. Having been spotted when she was 15 years old, she had to wait a year before being signed to an agency and starring in her own advertisement. The brunette beauty may be stunning, but we’ll have you know that she has graduated with a degree at the University of Lisbon too. As for her model physique, it seems like it’s all about consistency — keeping a healthy and toned body rather than focusing on losing weight and being just skinny. We hear from the model what it’s like to be one of the most coveted people on our screens.
How did you become a Victoria’s Secret angel, what was the casting process like? What quality do you think the casting directors look for?
I actually first started working with VS PINK. I worked with them for a few years and walked in the Fashion Show in that section. I suppose you can say that I “graduated” and then became an Angel in 2015.
How do you prepare for the show; do you have any special diet or exercise regime?
I really just try to work out a little more than usual and eat as healthy as possible. I’ll be the first one to tell you that I really don’t love the act of working out, but I do love the way it makes me feel once I’m done. I have a naturally thin frame so for me, it’s more about toning than trying to lose weight.
How about your beauty routine?
I try to be very good about my skin, but just like anyone else, hormones kick in and I get blemishes here and there. I wish I could tell you I have a miracle product but I really am still trying to figure out the best routine. I make sure I stay hydrated since what your skin looks like on the outside comes from what you put in your body so it is important to hydrate and eat a lot of foods with antioxidants. If I had to name a few products I like to use, I’d say Charlotte Tilbury’s magic cream and I use the Sisley hydration mask after every flight as I travel often.
How was November’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show like? Do you have a favourite look?
For this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, I had two looks. In one of them I wore massive wings. It was in the Secret Angels section of the show. It was the largest pair of wings I’ve ever worn, but luckily they were made of very light material so they weren’t heavy. I was completely obsessed with that whole look, and it was even more special because I got to close that segment. I even cried when I put them on for the first time during my fitting!
What’s your favourite part of the VS Fashion Shows every year, and why?
My favorite part of the show is definitely the day of the show when all of the hard work we put on for months and every other piece of the show finally comes together. Those two minutes on the runway are what I look forward to every year, definitely my favorite part.
How does the VS Fashion Show compare to other kinds of catwalks?
I think the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show compares to all other catwalks because it really allows you to highlight your personality. You get to smile, dance and basically have a party on the catwalk. The musical performers are absolutely an added bonus. They’re all incredibly talented.
What’s something unexpected people don’t know about you?
I’m a total goofball. Because I post sexy selfies and my modeling profession has me in lingerie all of the time doesn’t mean that I am always feeling seductive. In fact, most of the time, I just really like being silly and joking around with my friends. I’m always up for a good time. I also have a very sarcastic sense of humor.
What does being a VS Angel mean to you?
Being a VS Angel is one of the most amazing honors and professional steps in my career. It has helped open so many doors for me and I’m very thankful for the opportunity and experience. Earning my wings was such a surreal experience. You see all of these iconic women who have come before you and you think “is it real that I’m actually part of this group now?” It’s amazing.
