Deciding what to wear for Chinese New Year starts from the eve of, when the first of the family gatherings happen for reunion dinner. And then there’s Day 1 and Day 2, or if your CNY is especially happening, maybe Days 3 and 4 as well. It’s a lot to think about, so the last thing we all want is to have to worry about keeping our makeup from sliding off our faces as well. Unfortunately, all that travelling around in the heat means the odds are stacked against us when it comes to the longevity of our makeup already; but this year, we’re determined to win this uphill battle. No more squeezing in packs of oil blotters in our purses, not this year.

NARS Pore & Shine Control Primer

We’re so excited that NARS just revamped its primer selections, and the primer we’re sure most people will be looking to is the Pore & Shine Control variant. The soft-focus powders in the formula do the job, and with regular use, you might have to worry less about pores and shine in the future, since botanical ingredients and peptides help to balance the skin in the long run.

$65, available at the NARS store and counters.

NYX #NoFilter Finishing Powder

One of our star finds for 2016, this is still very much part of our daily routines. It’s a baked powder that mattifies the skin and blurs over imperfections, and is made to be a finishing powder that adds as a real-life photo filter, so you won’t need those phone filters for your selfies. There are 15 shades in the range as well, so this adds a slight coverage as well.

$28, available at NYX stores and Sephora.

Dior Diorskin Forever Perfect Cushion

We usually wouldn’t turn to cushion formulas for heavy-duty coverage, as we find that the typically more fluid consistency of cushion formulas tends to mean they fade from the skin faster than traditional foundations. Dior’s new cushion thankfully proved us wrong, with a finish they call “matte and luminous” that actually doesn’t require touchups over an 8-hour day. The coverage’s pretty substantial, too.

$78, available at the Dior Beauty store and counters.

L’Oréal Makeup Designer Paris Infallible 24H Stay Fresh Foundation

Labelling a foundation “24H” is definitely a tall order, but L’Oréal Makeup Designer Paris has a pretty good track record when it comes to liquid foundations. The finish is just slightly luminous but still looks natural enough, and it really does stand up to its no-transfer, no-shine and no-dryness promises. We won’t say your skin will look absolutely perfect for a full 24 hours, but you can definitely stay touchup-free for a good 8 to 10 hours.

$32.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, Sasa, major supermarkets and selected department stores.

Urban Decay Makeup Setting Sprays

We know plenty of people who can’t live without these, especially because the range is so suitable for local weather. The All Nighter keeps makeup in place for almost an entire day, the De-Slick is a favourite among those with oily skin, while the Chill is a treat for Singapore’s heat since it helps to cool the surface of makeup over time. The bottles have been given a makeover this year, and with the new black bottles, you no longer have to worry about staining them with makeup.

$48 each, available at Urban Decay stores and Sephora.
