April 13, 2017

Dolls have long been favourite toys of ours, especially since it’s all too easy to dress them up, though there’s a catch: we never thought about it when we were kids, but doll clothes are pretty basic, and okay, kinda outdated really. 2017 Barbie’s still wearing a layered satin prom dress from 1988, or um, cowboy boots, and while the whole t-shirt and jeans get-up is how we’d actually dress, that’s hardly imaginative. The denim’s not even ripped!

Rather than hopelessly lament though, we’re taken things into our own hands — with a touch of magic, these Blythe dolls, a cult favourite in Japan for their large eyes and oversized heads, come to life wearing our favourite Spring/Summer 2017 looks. That’s right, fashion that we’ve seen on actual runways, now shrunk down into adorable Blythe-size. Of course, our models get all dolled up too. For true, creative fashion you can be inspired by, take a look here:

LIFE OF BLYTHE

BOTTEGA VENETA
Classic and feminine, the Bottega heroine spells sophisticated charm and flattering cuts. Do the same in a standout burnt orange dress.

GUCCI
Work that stride – Gucci’s overload of prints, colour and texture is all about embracing your eccentric side, especially if you’re rocking a head-to-toe look.

MIU MIU
The seaside charm of the collection, complete with floral beach caps, shines through as clearly in Miu Miu’s line of soft, retro-style dresses.

PRADA
Bold checks and clashing prints rule the elegant boardroom style at Prada, though we can always expect some flair – ostrich feathers, for instance.

MARC JACOBS
It was lit over at the Marc Jacobs runway/cyber rave party, and fashion insiders couldn’t stop raving about the metallic fabric and exaggerated feminine silhouettes. Definitely cool-girl material.

CHANEL

While the LED accessories and digitally-brushed prints are plugged into a not-so-distant future, we can expect some classics too – Chanel’s signature box jacket gets a welcome tech update, now in multi-coloured tweed.

MOSCHINO
Always the kooky-cutter, Moschino plays around with the paper doll theme, complete with folding tabs. It seems like we aren’t the only ones with doll-like inspiration.

VALENTINO [Left]
The romantic air of Valentino calls for gowns that’ll sweep you off your feet, though you can go more casual too, as far as velvet pants and a belted trench goes, that is.

GIVENCHY BY RICARDO TISCI [Right]
Though more pared-back than previous seasons, Givenchy strives for a new serenity, with agate prints and zippered suits that gave off a sensual power.
