If you’re not one for prints and loud colours, shopping for swimwear can be a little tricky to navigate. Most retailers seem to stock an abundance of skimpy two-pieces adorned with frills, eye-catching patterns and colours that might be a bit too bright, that it can be quite the nightmare for the minimalists among us.

It’s actually just about looking a little harder though, if you really want to find swimwear that’s in line with your understated style – and you don’t even have to reveal too much skin to look incredibly chic, whether lounging on a picture-perfect foreign seaside, or just by your condo pool.

COS High Round-Neck Bikini Top and Bikini Bottom

Obviously, it was the burnt orange shade, the colour of the moment, that first caught our eye. The high-cut neckline and length of the top make this a more conservative option than a regular bikini as far as the front is concerned, but with criss-crossing straps at the back as a nice contrast.

Price TBC, available soon at COS stores.

Calvin Klein Underwear Cutting Edge Racerback Swimsuit

ck 1 ck 2

A regular black one-piece becomes a whole lot more, well, cutting-edge when you add in black straps with Calvin Klein branding right under the hips, too add a cut-out element to the design. Other subtle details include perforation between the cups, and a unique racerback.

$249, available at Calvin Klein Underwear stores.

Uniqlo U Seamless Swim One-Piece

Of course we can trust Christophe Lemaire to get understated elegance right. Or in Uniqlo’s words, making basics “anything but basic”. This  piece is more versatile than it looks, with the straps adjustable to wear it as an off-shoulder style or not, or even tucked into pants or a skirt to turn it into a regular top.

$49.90, available at Uniqlo stores and on

Seafolly Block Party Sweetheart Bralette Bikini Top and Brazilian Bikini Pant

Black with contrasting white bands is always a flattering combination, trust us. We like the sporty cut of this style, and the flattering, slightly V-shaped neckline.

$115 for bikini top and $99 for bikini pant, available at Seafolly stores and on

Pink N’ Proper Agent Romanoff Swimsuit

pink n proper

Yup, we’re really into pieces with black and white contrast. This one-piece is almost like a tankini, but without the midriff exposure; instead, cut-outs on the side plus an oval-shaped back window do the skin-baring.

$38.90, available on Zalora.

Solid and Striped The Morgan Triangle Bikini

solid and striped

This might be an otherwise common triangle-shaped bikini, but colour it in a beige with black straps (yup, again with the contrasting straps) and you get this very sophisticated style.
