Think Outside The (Chocolate) Box: Styling Your Accessories For An Edgy Valentine’s Day Look

Alright, the season of love will officially descend upon us next week, and let’s see, we’ve got… chocolates, flowers, and jewellery, you know, the typical stuff. Except, if you’re reading this, chances are, you’re not one for the cliché right — seriously, has anyone considered anything other than a bouquet of 99 roses?
And if you’re already (secretly) planning your Valentine’s Day outfits, never mind the actual date, here’s how you can steer clear of the typical for the sartorial part of your life, and you know, think outside the (chocolate) box a little: by changing up your accessories! And that’s even if you’re going for a more feminine outfit on date night, dresses with floral embroidery or lace or ruffles; here, we’ve put together three ways that you can elevate your look to something way more edgy.

1. Go Chunky

So typically when we’re looking at jewellery, you might be inclined to think of dainty pieces that don’t compete with your outfit, only gracefully complement it — we say, don’t be afraid to go loud and bold. With class though! Chances are, you can make even a simple black dress, like this sleek one, look more edgy with the right chunky accessories — chain link and mesh motifs are definitely trending recently, as well as chokers that accentuate your neckline. For something more elegant, go for shorter styles that don’t feel too overpowering, or a more neutral-toned silver with matching cuff earrings that keep your overall look more consistent.

2. Mix Your Metals

The one thing we definitely notice across jewellery this season? Mixed metals. Most people, especially the traditionalists, would find this concept horrifying, but not us! GUESS has a range of gold, silver and rose gold-coloured accessories (definitely our favourite shade), but they’ve also gone ahead and given us combination pieces that already thoughtfully incorporate all the above; a silver piece with a rose gold heart pendant, for instance, or silver and gold earrings. What you can do is embrace the concept of stacking — as long as they belong to the same style family, you can totally layer necklaces, rings, or create an arm party by pulling together various shades of bangles or bracelets. Top it off with a sweet watch that complements the rose gold elements, or a pop of red for some nice vibrancy.

3. Pile It On

P1100182-2
Go simple? Nah. Not when you have the liberty to pile it on! A lacy romper sounds typically feminine, so it’s up to some smart accessorising if you’re going for a more rebellious style. If you’re already the kind who hates playing it safe, you definitely ought to go to town on this one — the key thing is variety. Go for necklaces with different lengths, contrast thinner strands with more chunky ones, or pair a sleek piece with one that’s brimming with charms. You don’t even have to wear it the way it was intended; do like we did and double loop one of the longer necklaces for a shorter style, or go ahead and loop one over your wrists for a multi-strand bracelet.
