9 MUJI Items You Sadly Can’t Find in Singapore

Chances are; if you step inside any MUJI store, you’ll immediately be converted into a fan. It’s impossible not to fall in love with that slick Japanese precision, where everything is the right size and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. In fact, a store and more shouldn’t be 711’s slogan, but MUJI’s one instead.
Unfortunately, despite plenty of MUJI outlets inhabiting around our city, there remain a few Holy Grail items that aren’t available for purchase here, neither via in-store or online means (ridiculous, we know right?). If you haven’t heard of any of these items before, it’s because you probably haven’t seen them before. Here are 9 of our favourites:

1) MUJI PORTABLE AROMA DIFFUSER

Aroma diffusers are a godsend. They help condition the environment, making us feel good. Trouble is, a lot of them are rather inconvenient, especially for travelling purposes. Enter MUJI Japan’s Portable Aroma Diffuser. It’s small, fits in the palm of your hand, and doesn’t require water. It also runs on a rechargeable battery powered by USB.

Plus, using it is extremely easy. All you’ve got to do is twist it open and drop essential oil inside. It’s not too strong, although it’s powerful enough for hotel rooms – we know, because we included it in our list of items you cannot travel without. But good news, it’s soon going to be available in Singapore! A release date has yet to be announced though, so stick with us for updates.

Availability: Sold in MUJI stores in Japan and online for ¥3,990 (approx. SG$50)

2) MUJI ELECTRIC KETTLE

There are many “if only’s” in this world and getting boiling hot water in under a second is one of them. While that feat remains pretty much impossible, MUJI’s Electric Kettle gets the job done in about 80 seconds.

This sleek, cream-coloured kettle uses minimum electric power and powers off once its contents are boiled. Our only gripe is that it doesn’t fit much water inside. But for helping to give us a quick, piping hot cuppa coffee in the morning, that lack of storage is fine with us.

Availability: Sold in MUJI stores in the US and online for US$76 (approx. $100)

3) MUJI DIAL TYPE LED LIGHT

MUJI has an exceptional list of great home lighting options, but none of them are as pocket-friendly as the MUJI Dial Type LED Light.

Smaller than the average person’s thumb, this little bugger is a twist-and-turn light that’s surprisingly bright for its size, making it ideal for travel, camping, or for use as a night-light. The fact that its battery runs for four hours straight is pretty sweet too.

Availability: There are a few sellers on eBay offering the product for US$57.50 to US$75.

4) MUJI RICE COOKER

You’d think that a MUJI store in Singapore – an Asian brand in an Asian country, mind you – would carry rice cookers, but nope. You won’t be able to find any here.

But before you go around cursing your luck, you’ll be pleased to know that MUJI rice cookers do exist. The only trouble is that they’re only available overseas. If you do get your hands on one though, you’ll find a pleasantly designed device that’s easy to use.

Availability: Sold in MUJI stores in the US and online for US$195

5) MUJI POP-UP TOASTER

Never has a pop-up toaster looked so artistic before. MUJI’s one definitely looks like it belongs in some under the radar Berlin design museum. It’s definitely the rounded edges and clean white look that does the trick here.

Oh, and another thing, the toaster is currently sold out in MUJI’s online US store – a testament to its incredible popularity.

6) MUJI JUICE MIXER WITH MILL

MUJI’s Juice Mixer with Mill is another one of those items that we would so dearly love to buy off the shelf here. It’s not as if it’s a rare kitchen appliance or anything. But its white-coated exterior is enough to make us want to splash the cash.

Sadly, you’re only going to find this in Hong Kong, though there are a few sellers on eBay that you might want to check out.

7) MUJI ELECTRIC REFRIGERATOR

Like plenty of MUJI’s other products, the company’s electric refrigerator is pretty in white. But it’s only available in the motherland of Japan, so not exactly the most logical decision to ship one back here, unless you’ve got tons of cash to spare.

Availability: Sold in MUJI stores in Japan.

8) MUJI MICROWAVE

You won’t find a sleeker looking microwave than this. With its simple design that’s based on a monochrome colourway, MUJI’s microwave is a must-have addition for your MUJI-themed kitchen. Trouble is, you’ll never find it in a store in Singapore.

9) MUJI MARSHMALLOW GATEAU CHOCOLATE CAKE

Why this item failed to make it here is beyond us. Rich, fluffy, and brimming with decadence, the Marshmallow Gateau Chocolate Cake is a staple part of MUJI Hong Kong’s recipe section. That means you’ve got handmade kits to work with, consisting of the dessert’s ingredients like Handmade Gateau (HK$70) and MUJI Marshmallows (HK$10).

Here, you’d have to make a visit to a supermarket to grab those kinds of ingredients cause you won’t find these recipe kits at any MUJI Singapore store. However, if you’d still like to replicate the MUJI original, here’s a basic recipe guide on how to bake this sweet treat:
