Old Chang Kee Unveils New Nasi Lemak Curry Puff

In terms of food trends, McDonald’s owned it last year with the nasi lemak burger. And it looks as if Old Chang Kee wants to replicate that success. The snack chain announced on Thursday (Mar 1) that it will be introducing its very own nasi lemak version of a curry puff; namely, the Nasi Lemak Chicken O’ ($2/piece, $3.50 for two).

Impressive or horrifying, that’s up to you to decide. But there’s no denying that the new puff is intrinsically nasi lemak-esque. The greenish confection is crammed with nasi lemak sambal, chicken bits, onions, fried ikan billis with peanuts, and the sliced chunks of a hardboiled egg.
It will not, however, be imbued with any form of coconut flavour – a strange decision by Old Chang Kee, considering that coconut is a vital component of any nasi lemak dish. Instead, the puff’s greenish hue is due to food colouring and pandan essence, according to an Old Chang Kee PR rep that spoke to 8 Days.

Why this promo poster has an image of a coconut, we have no idea.

If you’d like to try out the Nasi Lemak Chicken O’, it’s available at all Old Chang Kee outlets island-wide. Do be sure to grab one as soon as you can though. Wouldn’t want to experience a FOMO moment if this thing goes crazy and sells out quickly like the McDonald’s nasi lemak burger, would you?
