Another Concealer You Must Add to your Beauty Box

By Adele Chan
A couple of months ago, I wrote about a concealer that’s close to my heart (not an exaggeration… I’ve been using that concealer for eight years now) — it’s Clé de Peau Beauté’s cult stick concealer. You can read about it here. That’s still the one concealer I must own and bring with me everywhere I go, but in all fairness to the rest of the concealers in the world… there are some other pretty good ones out there. I know friends who swear by the pot concealer from NARS, and when I asked around the NYLON team, the girls are using concealers from RMS (Beauty Writer Jade, who has sensitive skin), Colourpop (Editorial Assistant, Natalie, because it’s affordable and she combines her purchases with friends for free shipping), and Make Up For Ever (Deputy Editor, Amelia, who tried it when it came into office, and just continued using it because it wasn’t bad).
I was recently given the full range of the new liquid concealer from Laura Mercier to review; it’s called the Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer. In Singapore, it will be available in eight shades (there are 12 shades globally), and priced at $49. This is what it looks like:

The shades are categorised under “Neutral”, “Cool” or “Warm”, and I always recommend getting a proper swatch and match done at the counter to find out the right shade for your skin tone. I can use either 1N or 2N — both of them seem to work for me. And after a day playing around with this product, I actually like it. It’s so straightforward; it works really well as a concealer. Even its no-nonsense packaging is straightforward.

It’s very smooth and doesn’t crease.

Look at how smooth it is:

It lasts the entire day in office (12 hours, they say).

I wanted to test its claim of being “ultra-longwear”, so I got a few colleagues to find their match and conceal their dark under-eyes (job hazard). This is Syiqin’s before and after:

By 6pm, she says that the concealer was still holding up, and I do agree, she still does look pretty fresh (could also be youth).

It creates a flawless, natural finish.

Believe it or not, I instructed NYLON‘s designer to not photoshop any of these faces — so Leni’s picture here, is as natural as it gets! See the shady areas under her eyes, they all but disappear in her “after” picture. And like Syiqin, she says it lasted from our morning shoot until the time she got home — that’s close to 12 hours — plus it didn’t crease.

It feels weightless and a little goes a long way.

No one likes makeup that feels heavy on the face, and this one — I tried it myself — feels weightless, like second skin. In fact, any good, new makeup today should feel pretty weightless with the advancements in beauty technology; and considering Laura Mercier as a brand with high-performing makeup products, this lightweight concealer comes as no surprise. Also, a little goes a long way. Just three small dots of product under the eye is enough to conceal dark rings.

Also, I like that the doe-foot applicator is quite flexible. This actually does make application easier.

As recommended by the brand, we set the concealer with Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder for Under Eyes.

At the end of this exercise, I had the NYLON team asking if they could keep their respective shades; and that to me, is a successful product.
