Hector Espinal of Fenty Beauty Shows Us How to Get Glowing Like Rihanna

Arguably the biggest makeup brand to launch in 2017, Rihanna’s brainchild Fenty Beauty has garnered rave reviews since its birth, and the hype around it hasn’t died down one bit. From offering 40 shades of foundation to the introduction of multi-use products that made room for more playtime, Fenty Beauty has tapped into a palpable void in the market, promoting a sense of inclusivity beyond commercially sold beauty products.

Now, we’re sure you’ve heard of Fenty’s latest Beach, Please! collection. Followers of Fenty have been waiting for this drop since RiRi took the products out for a spin on Vogue, and it’s all we need to create the most gorgeous summer look ever. Here to show us how to get glowing like Rihanna is Fenty Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist Hector Espinal.

1. What’s your favourite makeup trend at the moment and why?

Highlight! I think it’s a good way of looking and feeling young and fresh. It just gives a nice, fresh energy to every look!

2. What’s the most important part of Rihanna’s beauty regime when it comes to creating her look?

I believe the Fenty Face, which is the first step that we did. It’s a soft matte base that’s usually the first thing she always does, and then from there she’ll add colours, textures, highlight, glosses and all of that.

3. Which is your favourite product from the Beach Please Summer Collection?

[Gasps] It is hard. I have to say the Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo in Sand Castle / Mint’d Mojito. Yeah, that one is very fun, wearable, and super unique. It has the perfect champagne colour, but it also has a greenish highlighter. I love it!

4. Apart from applying them to the cheeks and eyes, what are some interesting ways we can use the Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo?

You can literally use it anywhere you want. So, you can use it on the lips, and apply gloss on top for a different effect. On the eyes as eyeshadow, cheeks, body… You can use it anywhere. Earlier today, Rihanna used it as an eyeshadow, so it was fun to see it used that way. Just letting you know, we have no limits.

5. Do you have any tips and tricks on how to look glowy instead of greasy in Singapore’s humidity?

I know, right? I know. When I walked out here I was like, “Oh my God, do I look crazy?” I think for us, it’s all about the prep, so using the Pro Filt’r Primer really helps absorb any excess oil, which is great. And if you get shiny due to this weather, the Pro Filt’r Foundation is great. It’s nice and matte, has water and silicone which would prevent anyone from looking too sweaty. And I recommend our Invisimatte Blotting Powder. Rihanna uses that one on the red carpet, and I personally use it everywhere I go. A way to not look oily is to always make sure that the centre of the face is matte — forehead, underneath the eyes, and around the nose. If the cheeks look a little oily, that’s great, because it just enhances the highlighter.

6. What do you love most about being a Global Makeup Artist for Fenty Beauty?

Aside from meeting the whole world, it has to be the impact we’re causing on the everyday woman. We always work with models and celebrities but who really matters is the everyday woman — the mother, the makeup artist, the makeup junkie. As a Global Makeup Artist, that is so impactful because I see women coming to Fenty Beauty saying they’ve finally found a foundation, or they’ve finally found a product for them. It feels great to see anybody, no matter their race, culture, skin colour, gender, feels comfortable coming to our brand. Being a part of that as a makeup artist is a movement in beauty is great. It’s truly insane. It’s a blessing, as a makeup artist it’s like you’re literally part of making a move in history.

7. What’s the best part about working with Rihanna?

There’s two things. One, she’s extremely humble. I think it’s one of the most amazing things coming from such a recognised artiste like herself. Two, she is such a good makeup artist. To the point where you’re like, “Wait a minute. How did this happen?” We know her for her music, and now she’s gone into acting, and she’s doing so much, but when it comes to makeup, she is so good. It’s so great seeing her being so involved in her brand. Others usually just put their name on it, but she’s in it.
