Dyson’s Famous Supersonic Hair Dryer Gets a Professional Upgrade

No hair dryer on the market has garnered quite as much buzz as the Dyson Supersonic. Anyone who’s used the category-disrupting hair styler would understand how it solidified its cult status on the beauty scene soon after its launch, and why it’s picked up plenty of awards ever since. Despite being a global bestseller for 2 years now, Dyson saw room for improvement.

Dyson has launched their Supersonic Professional Edition, a new model that refines and amplifies everything that makes the Supersonic unique. Like the original, the Supersonic Professional has a V9 digital motor combined with Air Multiplier technology and intelligent heat-control measures to cut down drying time, and since the motor’s located in the handle, it takes much of the weight off too. Thanks to the new and improved features, we’ve fallen in love with it just as much as the pros have.

The concentrator nozzle has been re-engineered to be wider and thinner for more precision, and it now has twice the magnetic strength as its predecessor. The same applies to that of the other two attachments included: a smoothing nozzle and diffuser. It even has a longer cable that allows freer movement around clients. The filter’s also magnetic, removable, washable, and it comes with a filter-cleaning brush to boot. What’s more, you’ll know exactly when you have to clean the filter as the Supersonic Professional has intelligent white flashing LED lights to prompt you.

To celebrate the launch of the Professional Edition, Dyson demonstrated its iconic haircare technology live in the hands of professional hair stylist and educator Jon Reyman. Ahead, he showcases a series of 5 trending hairstyles you can recreate at home.

1. MODERN CURLS

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Step 1: Select 3 small sections of hair to create curls with one of two methods below.

  • Method 1: Take 3 small strips of hair to create a thin braid
  • Method 2: Twist hair into a roll using a comb

Step 2: Dry the twisted braid using the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer (high heat, medium airflow setting), using its diffuser attachment to set the curls.

Step 3: Loosen the twisted braid and gently shift the hair to the other side, incorporating a strong side part to create that voluminous modern curl look.

2. WET TWIST

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Step 1: Pre-dry the hair with the Dyson Supersonic using an oil-rich product, twisting it as you dry to create a little bit of movement.

Step 2: Pull a hair section from the top of the crown to behind the ear and tie into a loose bun with rubber band.

Step 3: Take front pieces of the hair and a few pieces from neck hairline out, twist them on the sides and tie them through the bun with a pin.

Step 4: Blow dry using the Supersonic with the styling attachment (high heat, medium airflow setting). Use a netting to support the style if necessary.

3. TEXTURED CURLS

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Step 1: Set the hair in small pin curl sets and dry them with the Supersonic and its diffuser attachment (high heat, low airflow setting).

Step 2: Once the hair is completely dry, break up the curls using fingers and comb the hair back gently.

Step 3: After combing it back, secure it with hair pins, and use the Supersonic and its diffuser attachment to set the style (high heat, low airflow setting).

4. WET LOOK

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Step 1: Using an oil rich product, comb through the hair and brush back using a wide tooth comb.

Step 2: Pin and secure the hair to preferred look.

Step 3: Blow dry hair and set the style with the Supersonic and its diffuser attachment (high heat, high airflow settings).

5. VINTAGE FRINGE

Step 1: Separate hair into two sections (top & bottom).

  • Top: Tie up the top section of hair from the parietal ridge to below the crown of the head
  • Bottom: Tie remaining hair below the parietal ridge into a small bun with an invisible hair net

Step 2: Take the top section and wet set using a pin curl set.

Step 3: Once the hair is set, the Supersonic and its diffuser attachment can be used to dry the hair (high heat, high airflow setting).

Step 4: Brush the hair out to a wave pattern, then use the Supersonic with its diffuser attachment to set the style (high heat, low airflow settings).

Much has been said about the machine, but what exactly does this new technology mean for professionals and their clients? We spoke to Jon Reyman about his experience with the new Dyson Supersonic Professional Edition.

How has the improved technology changed the way you work with clients?

Styling time has cut down due to the improved styling nozzle, the stronger magnets make the machine more versatile — plus the attachments won’t fall off. Also, the filters are easy to clean and maintain. At my salons, we clean the filters once a week. Most importantly, we’ve been able to precisely manage hair because machine is finely tuned. It’s light, versatile, and easy to move around. Basically an extension of my arm.

What’s the most common response you get from your clients with the Supersonic Professional Edition?

They love it! They think it’s beautiful and find that they can achieve salon results effectively.

Which hair trends would you recommend to Singaporean women looking to freshen up their style?

Modern styling is moving towards street style, something edgy that suits your lifestyle and environment will do.

Could you share with us your top tips and tricks on how to prevent frizz in our humid weather?

There are 2 hair types that get frizzy — coarse and soft hair. If you have soft hair, you need to add hold using light polymers. A sea salt spray will help manage that. If you have coarser hair, you’ll need a combination of polymers and oils. Also, a simple rule of thumb is shampoo more and condition less if you have soft hair, and vice versa.

What’s an easy way to keep loose curls in place all day?

Curls will fall out because of oil. Oils break down curls, so don’t use oils to set your hair. Only use holds, such as sea salt sprays.

Why did you choose to showcase these 5 hairstyles?

Talking about runway trends, I highlighted what I thought was relevant to the people and hair dressers in Singapore — weighing in from local advisors on what’s relevant to the market here specifically.
