It’s been a crazy week for Asian representation on both the big screens and the the internet.
The rom-coms that’s got everyone talking this week are none other than Crazy Rich Asians and Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved. Both movies star Asian leads, and Crazy Rich Asians even boast an entire Asian cast, and have won over the hearts of the viewers all over the world.
Leading man Henry Golding and director Jon M. Chu were in town on 21 Aug for the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians, along with the other Singaporean and Malaysian cast. Producer John Penotti also made an appearance. Take a look at all crazy awesome outfits on the red jade carpet.
And of course who could leave out Sukki Singapora’s red carpet appearance, who used this opportunity to make a stand on the lack of diversity in the film.
The one person whose absence was sorely noticed on the jade carpet was writer Kevin Kwan, who wrote the book that the movie of the same name was based on. We missed you too Constance Wu, but we thought that Kwan would at least make a trip back to his homeland which inspired the best-selling book.
Well, it turns out that Kevin Kwan is actually wanted by MINDEF for defaulting on his Nationals Service obligations. The writer who now lives in the United States left Singapore when he was 11 with his family. I guess if STB can close one eye to his defaulter status, MINDEF can too? After all his book placed Singapore in Hollywood.
Crazy Rich Asians is now showing in cinemas islandwide.
