Back in the day, even before the gameboys were a thing, arcade games were all the rage. I mean, GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and FIFA weren’t even out yet, which is how you know that iconic games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders are two of the most #OG ones, amongst other arcade hits.
Talk about nostalgic. UNIQLO is set to launch THE GAME UT (UNIQLO T-shirt) collection in collaboration with Bandai Namco Entertainment and Taico, top Japanese video game developers at the end of August.
These unisex UTs will feature 8-bit visuals from Space Invaders and Pac-Man as well as other favourites that were part of the arcade boom back in the 70s and 80s.
They’re pretty cute and come in a range of designs, whether you prefer prints, quirky graphics or minimalist designs.
The Game by Namco Museum
Equal parts colourful and playful, these shirts feature the famous characters we’ve grown to love over the decades, like Pac-Man. We’re no strangers to this game. It’s been around for a long time, since the 1980s, and it looks like it’s here to stay with Pac-Man Doodle launched in 2010. No matter how old you are, Pac-Man will always be a part of your life.
Love stripes? The collection features striped tees designed in the playful aesthetics of Pac-Man.
Love prints? The line also features designs that are eye-catching and stylish, like this Galaga design. Galaga (1981) was one of the most commercially successful Japanese arcade video games of its time, featuring an exciting duel between spacecraft and multiple aliens and enemies.
Other realistic designs by Namco Museum also feature Xevious (1982), an old classic vertical shooting game famous for its terrains.
The collection also features designs from the game Dig Dug, a game set in underground tunnels of dirt where players have to eliminate monsters during gameplay. How adorable are these monsters though?!
Suitable for all ages, these tees are great for the young ones, as well as those young at heart. The range also offers more minimalistic designs with key details that make these characters instantly recognisable. These designs span across arcade games, from Dig Dug, to Pac-Man and Mappy.
The line also features T-shirts with a tasteful pocket detail which adds greater texture to the look.
You’ll also find the beloved character Mappy on these T-shirts. Mappy is a game in which the police mouse’s mission is to enter the cats’ mansion to retrieve stolen goods.
These tees by Namco Museum will be exclusively available on 31 August at Orchard Central and online in celebration of Orchard Central (Global Flagship Store)’s 2nd Anniversary celebration. The tees will be available at all stores from 10 September.
The Game by Taito
Space Invaders will also be making its debut as part of the UT collection. Launched in 1978, it became a mega hit and reached a worldwide audience. Though decidedly simple, this shooting game has found much popularity through the decades, and ushered in the invader game genre.
The simple, yet classic designs of these tees are both fashionable and fun, and fit easily in the wardrobe as staples. They also come in minimalistic colours and designs, making them easy to match.
The UTs feature graphics that stick to the game’s 8-bit look, seen especially in the pockets with invader embroidering.
The Game by Taito collection will launch in all UNIQLO stores and online on 24 September.
