Google’s PhotoScan App Lets You Easily Back Up Your Pre-Smartphone Photos

Remember those old printed photographs from your childhood, the ones that are probably hoarded up in some dusty old cabinet around your house? Yep. We all have them, but we maybe only flip through them from time to time.
Google however plans to change all that. The tech giant released on Wednesday (15 November) a brand- new app for iOS and Android that allows you to scan old printed photos in just a few seconds.

Titled PhotoScan, the app digitises your oldest, most treasured memories, and you can now easily have high quality back-ups of your parent’s wedding photos or a picture of Grandma in 1965 without buying a troublesome flatbed scanner.
While this kind of technology is nothing new – there are other photo scanning smartphone apps around – PhotoScan expertly corrects imperfections in the capture process using machine learning.

For instance, it removes glare, as well as applies image correction tools such as colour and exposure adjustments. Basically, you’ll be getting an awesome digital copy no matter how old your photo is.
Using the app is easy too. Just line up a photo in the provided border, and once aligned, the app will prompt you to hover your smartphone over four white dots. Once these dots are connected, your digital copy can be easily saved to the Google Photos Library.

That’s not the only cool thing though. If you use the Google Photos app, there are now some great updates to check out. The “auto-enhance” feature becomes more intelligent, using editing tools like exposure, contrast and warmth, as well as 12 new filters to enhance an image.
