Counter Culture: Boys In Beauty

There’s just something about guys who can nail a glitter cut crease look, have 24/7 on-fleek brows and know the difference between Ruby Woo and Russian Red. Heck, guys of today could probably wing an eyeliner better than girls — which proves this one simple statement of something so powerful — makeup doesn’t have to be gendered. These boys have earned their stripes, not only in the millions of followers that they’ve racked up on their socials, but by also being crowned ambassadors for some of the biggest beauty brands. Saddle up and ready your beauty arsenal, girls — these boys aren’t here to play, they’re here to slay.

JeffreeStar

JEFFREE STAR

If you’ve followed Jeffree Star through the years, you’d know that the pop-singer-turned- beauty-mogul has but one signature look — crazy eyeshadows in equally crazy colours. The pink- haired owner of cult-favourite indie brand Jeffree Star Cosmetics has tons of makeup experience, and it’s evident that he knows his stuff well with the roaring popularity of every single one of his products. Star does make some kick-ass liquid lipsticks (easily one of the best out there), but we feel that his eyeshadow palettes are the ones that truly reflect his extravagant personality. His latest release, the Androgyny Palette, is Star’s take on a neutral colour selection, with a twist, no less. There are the usual browns and taupes, but also an army green and an electric blue, just for that pop of colour. All shadows glide on buttery and beautiful, with pigmentation that’s to-die-for. Calling out the wild-at-hearts, this one’s for you.

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Androgyny Palette, US$45. Available on jeffreestarcosmetics.com.

MannyMUA

MANNY GUTIERREZ (MANNY MUA)

He’s more affectionately known as Manny MUA on YouTube, and there’s no denying that the beast in full-face glam is on a roll. Manny is not only one of the fastest growing beauty influencers online (he’s not playing games when his YouTube subscriber count is close to 2.4 million), but he’s also the first male face for renowned drugstore brand Maybelline. It’s really no wonder, for his candid humour is nothing but charismatic, and that’s on top of his skill and finesse when it comes to makeup. And of the many looks that he has featured on his channel — from soft, natural ones to full-out drag — there is one feature that Manny always falls back on, and that is a pair of overdrawn and pouty nude lips. Maybelline’s Colour Sensational Creamy Matte lipstick in Daringly Nude is a brownish nude with pink undertones that could be worn as an everyday colour.

Maybelline Colour Sensational Creamy Matte in Daringly Nude, $19.90. Available at major drugstores and department stores.

JamesCharles

JAMES CHARLES DICKINSON

The 17-year-old is probably best known on the Internet for firstly, being Covergirl’s first male ambassador, and secondly, for the fact that he is indeed the sister who actually brought a ring light to his senior year photo-taking session just so his highlight would pop. Not one to shy away from over-the-top looks, Charles holds in high regard not only his precious highlighters, but also his lashes as well — because nothing looks more girly than a pair of fluttery lashes, coated with thick black mascara. Covergirl’s mascaras have always won rave reviews, and their Super Sizer Mascara is one that particularly suits short, Asian lashes because of the unique wand that has both long and short bristles. Start off with the shorter bristles at the roots, and then twirl the brush upwards with the longer bristles to comb through any clumps, for wispy and luscious lashes.

Covergirl Super Sizer By Lashblash Waterproof Mascara, US$6.85. Available on covergirl.com.

BretmanRock

BRETMAN ROCK

Fun fact: Bretman Rock is indeed the Filipino- American’s real name, because of his dad’s love for wrestlers Bret Hart and The Rock. With at least 2.7 million followers on Instagram, Rock frequently champions his love for over-the-top lashes as a key product for his signature smoky, sultry look. His exclusive collaboration with Eyeris Beauty gave birth to a luscious pair of falsies that combines volume, length and drama. The Hot Tea lashes (as well as all lashes on Eyeris Beauty) are lovingly handcrafted with a long-short pattern to mimic natural lash growth, and each individual section is concentrated for a bold, sexy look. These lashes could be worn up to 20 times when properly cared for so really, pop them on on days where you feel like a little extra drama is needed. They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and with lashes like these — you don’t even have to try.

Eyeris Beauty Hot Tea Lashes, US$28. Available on eyerisbeauty.com.

GD

KWON JI YONG (G-DRAGON)

He might be King Midas of Asian fashion, for honestly, whatever G-Dragon sports (or does) instantly becomes a trend. The suave Korean rapper, singer-songwriter and fashion icon and his very charismatic (not to mention, wildly popular) boy band Big Bang could very possibly be the first dudes that started embracing radical makeup in Korea — on and off shoots. We’ve seen G-Dragon with nothing on but simple eyeliner, to crazy, smoked-out eyeshadows and even coloured contacts — and that’s when Korean men finally saw the beauty of BB cream. It’s for good reason that Big Bang was chosen to front the brand Moonshot, and they offer the Big Bang 10 Hand Cream, because men deserve to have baby soft hands too. The scent of the cream follows the iconic GD eau de toilette, and it is made, very fittingly, with dragon fruit extract and shea butter for intense hydration.

Moonshot Big Bang 10 Hand Cream, $20. Available at Sephora and on sephora.sg.
