The Exfoliating Ingredient Your Skin Needs to Look Its Brightest and Healthiest

Similar to salicylic acid, glycolic acid is a type of chemical exfoliant that’s geared towards acne-prone skin and it’s also highly recommended to those in need of a little brightening. But what exactly sets these two apart, and how should we incorporate glycolic acid into our skincare routines? Today, we’ll be learning a little more about this impressive ingredient.
What is glycolic acid?
This ingredient falls into a set of molecules known as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), so you’ll often find it paired or mixed with four of the other AHAs: lactic acid, citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. Due to its high acidity and effortless solubility, it works incredibly well as an exfoliator. In low concentrations of less than 3%, it’ll work as a water-binding agent, which is perfect for drier skin types; and at concentrations greater than 4%, it’s able to dissolve dead skin.
How does it work?
Glycolic acid has the ability to penetrate damaged upper layers of the skin to assist in the shifting to dead skin cells, which will give you a smoother surface and a more youthful glow. It removes the build up of dead skin cells, thereby decongesting the skin to encourage cell renewal. Hence, you may notice a reduction in the appearance of pigmentation after using glycolic acid too. This is why products containing the exfoliant is also peddled as an anti-aging product that works well on dry skin types.
Likewise, once you’ve applied a glycolic acid product on, you may experience a slight tingling sensation on the surface of the skin. This is caused by the low pH of glycolic acid, so there’s no need to be alarmed. However, if it starts stinging and you notice much more redness and dryness, limit your usage to once a week. One last thing to note is that ingredient can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so make sure you wear sunscreen daily to eliminate that. Check out our top picks below, and glow on.
