Review: We Tried A Full Face Of Daiso Makeup And Here's How It Turned Out

No matter how big our makeup collection, we will always have more things to get – new releases, holy grail items and limited edition collections. But let’s be real. Makeup can get pretty expensive and if we’re not careful, we can end up spending much more than we should have, just in one trip to the makeup store. I only just started wearing makeup a year ago so I’m a sucker for everything beauty. But as a student, I definitely don’t have the budget to blow hundreds on a single visit to Sephora so I am a huge fan of inexpensive products that work, like the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer or Korean makeup products.
We all know there’s no better place for budget shopping than Daiso. It has everything you can ask for – snacks, food, homeware, stationery and accessories, all for the price of $2 each. So we scoured the aisles of Daiso for $2 makeup products to create a full face of makeup to find out if we should be visiting the Japanese store for makeup products more often.

Initial Thoughts
In all honesty, I didn’t have much expectations for all the products except Daiso’s Eyebrow Pencil because I heard quite a lot of positive feedback from those who have tried it before. Also, the shade range for base makeup is horrendous so we weren’t even sure if the one foundation shade that Daiso had would match me. Fortunately, it did. Thank goodness. If not, I would’ve ended up looking like a wayang singer on the bus home.
First Impressions:
So here’s the lowdown:
The Bad: The base makeup products are a no-go. Period.
Although the packaging calls it Powder Foundarion (there was a typo), the ‘foundation‘ acts more like a setting powder. It offers no coverage and didn’t even out my skin tone. It did make my face more matte but it was a failure as a foundation.

The concealer was really disappointing as well, and I didn’t even have high expectations from the start! It pulled at my skin and it was a nightmare to blend out. It also has a pink undertone so I think that it’ll be more suited for colour correcting rather than concealing, if you ever wanted to try it. I also had a really huge spot on my cheek so it was the perfect opportunity to test the coverage of the concealer but, nope, it really sucked.

There was also a lavender setting powder that is supposed to brighten your complexion but, again, there was no difference despite me being quite generous with the powder. Also, the plastic packaging broke before I could even start applying it.

I prefer blushes that I can build up to prevent myself from looking like a performer for a kindergarten concert (we’ve all been there) but this one was so sheer that I needed a lot of swipes before I was satisfied with the colour payoff.
Overall, I would suggest everyone to stay away from the base makeup products – they really don’t work.
What did so-so: Let’s move on to product that was just alright. It wasn’t amazing but was acceptable considering it was only $2.
I’m quite picky when it comes to eyeliner – ‘soft’, ‘glide-on’ and ‘doesn’t budge’ are the key words that I look out for. Daiso’s one needed some time before it got softer and less chalky so I suggest swiping it on the back of your hand to warm up the product for easier application. The product is more like a rectangular block rather than a pencil so it will be fairly hard to get a thin line unless you use the edge of the product to apply your eyeliner. I would say this product is just so-so and only something I’d get if I was really desperate for an eyeliner.

Surprisingly not bad:Next, I have to talk about the eyeshadow. I was quite excited for this because I really liked the coral shade (I’m into the peachy neutral look now) but when I put it onto my lid, it looked like there was a literal glitter explosion on my eyelids. The coral pigments couldn’t be seen at all and I just had a ton of silver/pink shimmer. Luckily, the shaky start was balanced out by the addition of the brown shade. It wasn’t too shimmery, was pigmented, blended well and really pulled the look together (I was quite uncertain before the brown was applied because it looked like the whole look was falling apart) so the final eye look was pretty pleasant.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about the eyeshadow, but for the price, it’s surprisingly not bad.

The Good: A shoo-in for this category is the eyebrow pencil. It’s soft, creamy, pigmented and easy to apply. I really liked that the applicator was oval-shaped with tapered ends so that you can get a nice and clean tail for your eyebrows. The only gripe I have with it is that the colour was a bit too red for my liking, even though it was in the shade Brown, which is what I normally get for eyebrow products. The pencil was highly-praised so I had high expectations but ended up being slightly disappointed. I guess it’s better to keep my expectations low when it comes to budget makeup products.

Another product, or two products, that performed fairly well were the fake eyelashes and eyelash glue. The eyelash band was thin, flexible and they felt very comfortable on my eyelids, other than the fact that they kept poking into the inner corners of my eyes but this is probably due to my inexperience with fake eyelashes (this was my first time!). I’m going to take this opportunity to praise myself because I think they were placed well, especially for a first-timer. But I think this was helped by the fact that the lashes were really easy to put on!
The clear glue (plus points for being clear!) also held my lashes in place and I think they would have lasted me throughout the day. The only downside is that the tips of the inner corners did come off after 2 hours but that’s still impressive considering that I was doing some heavy duty blinking due to the discomfort from my inner corners. So although I did run into some problems with the lashes, it was probably due to my inexperience with them.

Exceeds Expectations: The one and only product that well exceeded my expectations: the lipstick.
It does everything it says on the packaging: “hydrates”, “soft touch” and “supple look”. It was really moisturising, lightweight and pigmented. I even forgot I was wearing it after a while because it felt so comfortable on my lips. It’s texture leans towards a tinted lip balm and is the number 1 product I would recommend out of the 10 products that we picked up from Daiso.

Final ThoughtsTo be honest, the finished look turned out pretty good. Although it’s much more makeup than I would normally put on, I’m glad I didn’t end up looking like a clown. The products were individually sub-par but when put together, it kinda worked out. Would I be heading to Daiso to get makeup? Probably only for the lipstick but I think I’ll stick to my pharmacies and makeup stores to get my makeup fix. Do you have any suggestions for budget-friendly makeup products?
