Cruise Oceans Wide With CHANEL's Métiers d'Art 2018 Accessories

The Métiers d’Art collections for CHANEL celebrate the brand for epitomising art in fashion: in its aesthetic inspiration, historic significance and craftsmanship present in its atelier. Such shows transcend even the prestige of fashion week, particularly this year when it was held at the Elbphilharmonie, overlooking the sea ports of Hamburg, where creative director Karl Lagerfeld was born.

To mark the occasion, the CHANEL runway was filled with models in iterations of nautical garb, tweaked in such a specific manner only Lagerfeld himself could pull off. The fashion house under him has seen cycles of “literal” translations, from looking Greek chic for Cruise 2018, mermaid iridescent for SS18, and forest-fairytale for the latest FW18 show. This is no different, which is great because that’s why we love CHANEL anyway. Their impeccable fabric construction and tailoring enhances a woman’s figure, even with a navy and ice tweed pant or jacquard cable knit turtleneck sweater.

CHANEL accessories are like rare gems, and these bear semblance to the rarity of Rose’s Heart Of The Ocean diamond necklace from our favourite romance epic, Titanic. In the same vein of looking at nautical themes, Lagerfeld presents a bricolage of ocean-themed bags that remind us of a cheesy seafood restaurant decor revived by the skilled artisans at the CHANEL atelier.
There’s a canvas quilted accordion one so we can mime like we’re part of an orchestra when Under The Sea comes on at Disney Sea. Also, a white life buoy crossbody which, unfortunately, will sink in water because of its jewel-encrusted panels and interlocking C’s logo. If not, this rust shipping container lookalike with CHANEL in bold is pretty ironic since it looks like it wouldn’t even fit a large phone in… but then again, it’s a bag that looks like a shipping container.

Of course, anchors play a huge role if we’re going to dress up like Sailor Moon. Tweed is strategically crafted like weathered fabric, and heels are made to look like CHANEL pirates have stuck ocean treasures onto their own wears. Such exemplifies the art of CHANEL, there’s a sense of tackiness Lagerfeld plays with when he envisions his collections. In reality, however, they are pieces all women would lust after, they marry well with old CHANEL codes while breaking away from the stuffiness of how others might perceive luxury fashion to be.
