Met Gala 2018: The Best And Worst Looks From The Red Carpet

The first Monday of May just passed and we know what that means: yet another outrageous night of glamour and avant garde outfits at the annual Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, celebrating The Met’s Costume Institute exhibit which will be on display until early October. Having a religious theme meant that many stars sported crowns, halos and veils as well as religious paintings and motifs across their outfits. The thing about the Met Gala is that attendees are encouraged to go bold but there’s a very fine line between avant garde and ridiculous.
Here’s our take on the best looks and the questionable ones from the 2018 Met Gala Red Carpet.

The glorious looks from the Red Carpet

The young starlet always kills it on the red carpet but we’re still blown away by her Met Gala ensemble. Zendaya channels Joan of Ark in a custom-moulded Versace Atelier gown, embellished with gunmetal chainmail and Swarovski crystals.

Gigi Hadid’s delicate Versace Atelier gown hugs her tenderly, as if she’s being held by iridescent butterfly wings. It’s a heavenly body in a heavenly dress.

This is one of our favourite looks of the night! The Game of Thrones actress looked so ethereal in this black and gold Dolce and Gabbana gown, topping off the outfit with a luxurious gold crown. Not only was her outfit flawless, her makeup was stunning as well (it’s all Laura Mercier!). Instead of using a contour colour, she carved out her cheekbones by extending bright pink blush the way to her eyes. It’s a look that only the Dragon Queen can pull off.

Rihanna in Maison Margelia

Riri took the boldest outfit of the night, dressing up as the Pope in a custom-made “Artisanal” Maison Margelia. The glorious coordinated 3-piece comprises of a sculptural jacket and a skirt worn over a bustier dress, topped off with a custom made hat. No wonder she’s the co-chair of this year’s Met Gala.

Migos in Versace

We don’t know how they did it but the trio looked classy and elegant while maintaining their hip-hop vibes. The jackets are bright and heavily embellished but they don’t look tacky or overwhelming. Kudos, Migos.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Ralph Lauren

Doesn’t she look like a goddess? We love the delicate floor-length cape draped over her shoulders because it just looks like she’s floating across the red carpet. As if the outfit wasn’t glorious enough, the former Victoria Secrets Angel added a minimalist metallic halo to finish off the look.

Chadwick Boseman in Versace Ateliar

Clean, chic and royal – the Black Panther actor looks dashing in this all-white ensemble by Versace. He truly looks like a King. It kinda makes us feel like shouting “Wakanda Forever”.

The looks that we’re on the fence about

Katy Perry in Versace

Katy Perry went over the top with the huge pair of fanned out wings on her back. Somehow, she looks like a true archangel – fierce yet elegant, powerful and charismatic. We’re not sure if we love it or if it’s too much. Then again, the Met is all about bold looks and she does look really good. It sure beats the pink get-up that she had for last year’s Met, anyway.

Cardi B in Moschino

Some of us at the NYLON office thought Cardi B looked good while others weren’t as convinced by her costume for the night. Maybe we won’t be as divided if the outfit was less poufy and more streamlined — though we all agree she’s still cool artiste. What do you think?

The straight-up “No”

Sarah Jessica Parker in Dolce and Gabbana

We don’t know what it is about SJP but it feels like she’s intentionally making ridiculous choices for the Met Gala. The gown didn’t look like a good fit and the fabric looked heavy. The red hearts also felt out-of-place but not as much as the white flower cupping her right ear. The huge headpiece also made her outfit looked unbalanced and sloppy. This was probably one of the worst headpieces of the night but the blue eyeshadow was the last straw for us. This was an immediate “no” for us.
