Virgil Abloh’s IKEA Collection Might Be His Most Affordable Yet

By now, you should be well acquainted with designer Virgil Abloh.

His name has been popping up on our radar over the past few weeks. Case in point: we’ve talked about his Elevator Music collection with Byredo, and that transparent suitcase with RIMOWA. And now, he’s giving us a brand new reason to talk about him, again (not that we’re actually complaining). Prototypes from the designer’s upcoming collection with Swedish furniture label IKEA were released, proving that Abloh is slowly, but surely turning into a household lifestyle name for all us hype-hunters out there.

The range, called the Markerad collection, was first teased in a live-stream video by Abloh and Henrik Most, creative leader of IKEA Range and Supply. In it, they revealed first looks at the upcoming collection, which include a triangular red doorstop, a transparent cabinet, and hand-shaved rugs.

“The theme is to create a design collection for the millennials,” said Most. Standing central to the homeware line is its affordability, which they assured will be “within IKEA’s price range”. Official images released features a see-through cabinet , a rug designed to look like an IKEA receipt, a “STILL LOADING” rug, and a red doorstop that can fit under the foot of a chair.

Further details of the collection are still being released at IKEA’s Democratic Design Day, happening from 7 – 8 June. But according to Highsnobiety, more prototypes have been released, including a rug, a table , and a “SCULPTURE” brown bag, which is OFF-WHITE’s take on the FRAKTA bag. It also cautioned that “there’s a chance these are still a work-in-progress and may differ from the final in-store products”.

Prices will range from €9.99 ($16) for the small “SCULPTURE” bag, €59 ($92) for the receipt rug, and the table going for €279 ($439). While the official release date is still uncertain, IKEA mentioned that the collaborative line will drop sometime in 2020.

From now till then, you can be sure we’ll be saving up for some of these pieces.
