The OPPO Find X Phone Comes With A Pop-Up Camera

We were just in Beijing this weekend for the launch of the Find X, and had a chance to play around with the phone before it hit the markets. The Find X comes in two gradient colours that reflect the light as it hits the phones – Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue. The gradient glass means that the back gets smudged very easily (and is also really hard to take a photo as it’s super reflective, but is really gorgeous in real life).

The OPPO Find series is the brand’s flagship line that is aimed at the higher end of the smartphone market. The other R series and A series are much lower in price. The Find X, which coincidentally is named similarly to Apple’s latest iPhone, is the latest phone from the Find series. The notch-less and bezel-less phone is nearly all screen, with a curved surface to make it easy to use in one hand.

The screen to body ratio is 93.8% – the biggest for any smartphone, including the iPhone X

The phone is marketed as the “phone of the future” by OPPO, and here are some of the newest functions in their latest flagship phone.

A RETRACTABLE CAMERA

Notches (the little black cutouts on the top of your phone) were all the craze when Apple dropped their iPhone X even though they’ve been around way before that. In order to maximise screen space, the iPhone X cut a notch into the top of the screen for the front camera. In the race to shave off as much useless space on the phone so that you can have the widest screen possible, the Find X has done away with placing the camera on the front.

Instead, the top of the phone will pop-up with a 25MP front camera and a dual 16MP and 20 MP rear cameras whenever a camera app is opened. Take a look here:

The sliding up and down mechanism is silent, and takes about 0.5 seconds to slide open. It’s pretty convenient for those who always drops their phone, which can result in cracked lens. But if you’re one of those who want to capture spur moments, the pop-up camera might be 0.5 seconds too long.

If you’re worried about the pop-up camera jamming up, there’s an auto-recovery mechanism for it to work properly.

AMBIENT LIGHTING AND 3D BEAUTY

Pretty much all the cameras on the newer phones all have a beauty mode. Samsung’s in particular makes you look like you’ve just been airbrushed into unrealistic perfection (and not in a good way), but the Find X comes with a 3D mapping technology so that you can sculpt various aspects of your face until you’re happy.

There’s also a filter to remove the wrinkles on your face. Who even needs to download the photoshop app on their phones anymore?

Another camera filter that we’re loving is the ambient lighting that comes with the phone camera. Not only can you brighten your surroundings, you can also add different lighting to your photos, totally changing the mood of your photos.

Here’s the two coloured lighting, which shadows half the picture in red and the other half in blue. I took the photo at the Find X launch in a exhibition hall that only had harsh yellow spotlights – there were no red or blue lights anywhere in the room at all. And the 25MP front camera is really good – it captures everything, even my baby hairs.

Here’s another picture we took at the same event space, this time with the film lighting filter.

The rear camera also allows you to shoot HD pictures in RAW. If you’re into handphone street photography, shooting your images in RAW will help you capture more details and make post-editing easier.

3D FACE MAPPING

There isn’t a home button or any fingerprint scanners on the back of the phone because the Find X uses 3D Face Scanning for biometric authentication. When you’re trying to unlock your phone, the top of the phone with the camera will pop up and scan your face. Again this will take all of half a second.

Most people outside China would probably just overlook this function, but the Find X also supports 3D face payment for Alipay – the very first Android phone to do so.

FASTER CHARGING

How many times have you been late because you were waiting for your phone to charge? The charging time of a phone is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a phone. Previously OPPO phones all came with the VOOC flash charge, and they even boast that you only need to charge the phone for 5 minutes and it’s enough to last you 2 hours of talk time. We haven’t really tested out this claim yet, but it definitely helps to shorten the charging time.

With the Find X, OPPO is releasing a SuperVOOC charge that can fully charge your phone in just 35 minutes. However, this SuperVOOC charge is only supported with the 256GB storage option. The Find X with 128GB storage will still be supported by the VOOC charge, which takes 90 minutes for a full charge.

OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition

Sport a fast phone to match your fast car

In their latest collaboration, OPPO has partnered up with Lamborghini for a super fast, sleek phone that sports the supercar brand logo on the back. The Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition is covered in a carbon fibre casing that’s similar to the texture of a Lamborghini car. Just in case you’re unfamiliar with carbon fibre, it’s a lightweight and hardy material that all Lamborghini cars are made of, so it’ll be like carrying around the phone version of a Lamborghini which is much more affordable than the actual car.

Since Lamborghini’s known for its fast cars, you can expect that your phone is going to be supercharged as well. The Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition will also come with the SuperVOOC charge, and will have 512GB storage. The other specs of the phone are pretty much the same, except that the icons on the Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition has a sleeker, more futuristic feel. Just look at it:

The Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition will also come packaged in a different box, and also comes with a charging cable designed to look like the ignition coil of the V12 engine of the Lamborghini Aventador.

The OPPO Find X comes in two colours – Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue, and comes with 128GB or 256GB storage options.

The OPPO Find X is available to purchase online in China from July 13 from Tmall, and will be available for purchase in Singapore from August (SG price and exact launch date TBC). In China, the OPPO Find X retails at 4,999 RMB for  the 128GB standard version, and at 5,999 RMB for the 256GB version with SuperVOOC.

The OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition retails at 9,999 RMB, and will be available in China in August.
