Get A Taste Of Hong Kong’s Craft Beer Scene At 65 Peel

Hong Kong’s nightlife is not always as gritty or bustling as the Lan Kwai Fong strip. Underneath the glamour of the nightlife hotspot that has become a mainstay amongst celebrities and Hong Kong dramas alike, there’s a burgeoning crowd who seeks out craft breweries, dive bars and underground clubs.

Just a few streets away from Lan Kwai Fong is 65 Peel, a low-key bar that serves up the best of Hong Kong’s craft beer scene.

Industrial Chic Vibes & Neon Signs

The minimalist industrial vibes seems to be trending in bars lately, and the neon signs and hanging lightbulbs all add to the laidback atmosphere. It’s almost like you’re just hanging out in a friend’s basement with a pint.

What to drink

It’s a microbrewery that specialises in beer, so you have to try out the “gweilou herbal tea” – or what the Hong Kongers call beer in Mandarin. 65 Peel keeps 12 local brews on tap sourced from breweries all over Hong Kong, and there’s a substantial selection of imported bottles to choose from. A pint on tap goes for about HKD$80, which comes to about SGD$14.

If you aren’t sure where to start, you can ask the bartender for some recommendations. Alternatively, you can try them by brewery – LionRock Brewery, Moonzen Brewery and Young Master Ales are some of the more well-known breweries in Hong Kong.

Other than beers, they’ve also got funky cocktails on the menu that is inspired by local Hong Kong flavours. Recently, they’ve just dropped the Spicy Hot Pot cocktail that includes Sze Chuan spices and mala bitters. Definitely one for the mala fans! Other cocktails include the Salty Lemon, which is a gin and salted lemon mix, and the Sweetened Red Bean, which looks like a dessert itself with a rum and red bean base topped with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles.

What to eat

While you’re there, get a couple of shared plates to nibble on. The menu is inspired by Asian flavours and features fusion snacks. Must-try dishes include the Smoked BBQ Chicken Wings that is served with either Curried Pineapple or Jasmine Tea dipping sauce, the Juicy Lobster Roll and the Sambal Prawns.
