12 Quirky Mooncakes To Get This Year When You’re Bored Of Normal Mooncakes

We’re about a month away from Mid Autumn Festival (which falls on 24 September this year) and it’s time to start planning where you’re going to get your mooncakes from this year.

It’s almost like a competition between bakeries and restaurants to see who can come up with the weirdest coolest mooncake flavours of the year, kind of similar to the obsession with local flavours during National Day. If you’re not one for the traditional lotus paste baked mooncakes, here are some other quirky options you might want to consider!

Guinness Mooncakes from Guinness

 

You’re not going to get drunk on these mooncakes from Guinness. The snowskin mooncakes encases a Guinness-infused chocolate ganache that is filled with a  coffee-flavoured lotus paste that pays homage to the malty stout. Teh-tarik and Acai Mooncakes from Grand Hyatt

Grand Hyatt’s snowskin mooncake collection usually always includes the popular Champagne Truffle mooncake, but their new flavours sound much more exciting. This year, Grant Hyatt is dropping four new flavours: a healthy Acai Berry Truffle infused with blackcurrant liqueur, a locally inspired Teh Tarik with Chocolate Truffle, Black Sesame with Walnut Truffle and Green Apple and Basil with Trigona Honey Truffle. The box comes in a splash of vibrant blue and purple, and stamped with Grand Hyatt’s insignia in the middle.

Another throwback to our favourite childhood drink with Fullerton’s newest snowskin mooncake flavour! Mooncakes, Häagen-Dazs style! The mooncake-shaped ice cream treats are coated in chocolate, and topped with icing in the shape of adorable LINE Friends characters! We’re a little disappointed that they didn’t use the delicious cream filling from their cookies, but the Oreo mooncakes comes in 4 different flavours: Brownie Chocolate, Double Chocolate With Milk, Strawberry Jam, Custard & Pineapple-flavoured Jam. Instead of tea, a cup of milk might be a better match.

Mochi Mooncakes from TungLok

Putting a Japanese twist on the traditional mooncake is TungLok with their mochi mooncakes. The healthy bites are made from melt-in-your mouth brown sugar mochi that is filled with Red And Yam, or Peanut and Black Sesame. The mochi is also shaped to look like the sacred seven-petal flower.

Barrel-aged Rye With Coffee And Chocolate Mooncake from Summer Palace

Regent Hotel sees a collaboration between Summer Palace’s Dim Sum Chef Leong Kwok Sing and Manhattan’s Bar Manager Philip Bischoff for a boozy treat – the Barrel-aged Sazerac 6-year-old Rye with Coffee and Chocolate. The sweet chocolate and coffee paste is similar to a chocolate mousse or tiramisu, albeit a little nuttier.
