Beauty Tutorial: Create many looks with the Holiday palettes from Chanel, Dior and YSL

The holiday calls for special edition palettes. Whether you collect them for fun, or actually use them on your face, these three from Chanel, YSL and Dior are definitely worth getting. I’ve invited my long-time friend and collaborator, Ginger Lynette down to the NYLON studio to create these looks on our model, Rita’s face. Ginger shares the same makeup principles as me — original looks, minimal retouching, and good ol’ fashion makeup artist skills. We’ve created these looks step-by-step for you to follow, and Ginger shows us that they are really easy to do. Enjoy.

Chanel Le Palette Caractère Lipstick Collection

This is my favourite holiday palette of 2018; it’s so pretty, I don’t want to touch and spoil it. But at the same time, I want to discover all the looks we can achieve with these five gorgeous shades of red.

Here are all the single shade looks:

Shade 1: A bright orange red in a velvety semi-matte finish.
Shade 2: A classic glossy brick red.
Shade 3: A rose red that also has a velvety semi-matte finish.
Shade 4: A glossy burgundy wine red.
Shade 5: A glossy deep purplish plum.

If solids are too boring for you, try a two-toned lip like this… here we used shade 5 on the upper lip, and shade 3 on the lower lip.

Want to get even more creative? Try a checkered lip! On the upper lip, Ginger is using shade 5 and 1. On the lower lip, she’s using shade 4 and 3.

Here’s a tip: you don’t need a professional lip brush for application. Ginger is using a narrow tip paint brush she bought from Art Friend.

Lastly, here’s a trend that everyone wants to try… a gradient ombre lip. Ginger uses shade 1 on the outside and shade 5 on the inside. The key here is to blend well where the two colours meet so there are no harsh lines. This “just bitten” lip look is the most challenging to achieve; so be patient, and use two different brushes (so you don’t stain and transfer the colours).

YSL Gold Attraction Edition

Looking at all the colours in this palette, my first impression was that they are quite subtle — and shimmery. It’s a pretty standard Christmas face palette, which means it’ll also be pretty easy to use.

Step 1: Ginger starts with the silver eyeshadow shade from the palette, and because it’s a cream texture, it acts as a base for the rest of the eyeshadow colours. She applies this across the entire eyelid as a wash of colour.
Step 2: Next, she uses the gold eyeshadow powder on top of the silver eyeshadow to achieve an iridescent gold/silver metallic finish.
Step 3: The dark silver shade is then applied just on the outer corners of the eyes, and a bit under the eyes at the corners as well.

Step 4: For the cheeks, Ginger takes the darker blush shade and applies it along and below the cheeks.
Step 5: Next, the brighter pink is used as a soft wash just on the apples of the cheeks. Ginger recommends using the base of the nose as a guide — the coloured blush should start slightly above this line. And if it’s a blush powder, pat it on in a circular motion.

Step 6: As a finishing touch to the face, Ginger uses the highlighter on the cheekbones, down the nose bridge and above the lips.
Step 7:
Bonus step for the lips! Ginger uses her fingers to pat on the lighter blush on the centre of the lips, and the darker blush on the outer corners of the lips, achieving fresh, healthy looking lips on Rita. Tip: Ginger applied a clear lip balm before patting on the powder blush colours onto the lips, to help the powders stick to the lips and not appear dry.

This is the final full face using the YSL holiday palette.

Dior 5 Couleurs Midnight Wish Eyeshadow Palette

It’s hard to go wrong with this palette of golds and browns; these staple shades suit every skin tone, and the metallic shimmery finishes add just that touch of sparkle to a holiday eye look.

Step 1: Ginger uses the centre gold shade and applies it on the eyelid, stopping just below the brow bone. Because this shade is very shimmery, Ginger suggests applying it with the fingers and patting it on for better colour payoff.
Step 2: Next, Ginger uses the orange gold shade and applies it over the eyelids until just above the crease.
Step 3: The ivory highlighter is then applied down the bridge of the nose.

And that’s it! This eye-brightening look should take you less than 2 minutes to achieve, and works for both day and night.

Next, we couldn’t resist going for a classic smokey eye with the rest of the Dior eyeshadow colours.

Step 4: Apply the copper shade on the creases of the eye, and along the eye socket line; and importantly, Ginger says you need to blend it really well so you don’t see any obvious colour lines.
Step 5: Finally, use the dark brown shade to softly line the upper eyelids, as well as the lower lids. No eyeliners are necessary here because this darkest shade effectively creates the eye line that we want.

And here it is… a classic smokey eye using all the colours in the Dior eyeshadow palette.
