Everything You Need To Know About The Drunk Elephant Craze

Most skincare routine would usually consist of a quick wash, some toner and a dab of moisturiser – unless you’re one who follows a more complex routine like the Korean 10-Step Skincare routine that is. However, unlike the other brands in the market, the cult beauty brand, Drunk Elephant, has switched things up with their own line of products. We sat down with Tiffany Masterson, Founder of Drunk Elephant, as she unveils the story behind her brand and illustrates how the simplicity of skincare is the best sophistication in this new age.

It’s no news that skincare has been a leading topic in the beauty world, especially when we’re always on the hunt for a solution to fix our skincare woes. By now, you would’ve probably been exposed to a plethora of products that promises to give you flawless looking skin – which we’ll eventually use only for a few times before chucking it aside along with the mountain of products from your previous haul. However, what differentiates Drunk Elephant from the masses is the simplicity of it’s routine. According to Tiffany Masterson, she advises “only to use the products that your skin needs on that day”.

More about Marula Oil and its key benefits.

Drunk Elephant Virgin Luxury Facial Oil, $102. Available at Sephora.

The Marula Oil, otherwise known as one of Drunk Elephant’s most iconic product, comes from the nut of the Marula fruit. Loaded with antioxidants, this holy-grail product is anti-ageing agent that’s lightweight, heals the skin and helps with acne. It doesn’t stop there – in fact, the oil also enhances the effects of serums that you apply on your face as it allows better penetration to the skin. It’s also really versatile as you smooth it on your cuticles or all over your hair to give it that extra boost in moisture.

It’s suitable for ALL skin types.

A moisturiser that’s suitable for all skin types. Rescues your dry and dull skin by giving it the right amount of moisture. The Lala Retro Whipped Cream ($86) is now available at Sephora.

To many, we find that the skin types that we’re all born with play a part in determining the kind of products we use on our skin. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Tiffany. She says, “skin types all function the same and my theory is to treat them the same. It’s kind of a food diet. Skin behaviours are more often than not, created by the ingredients that we’re using.” Bringing forth her theory of the Suspicious 6 – the root cause of most of the skin behaviours.

What’s the Suspicious 6 and why you should avoid them.

So at this point in time, you must be wondering what these Suspicious 6 actually refer to. Truth be told, these 6 ingredients are commonly found in most of the skincare products that we have lying on our vanity table.

Now, before you start clearing out your stash of beauty items, we suggest you understand why these ingredients actually do more harm than good to your skin.

Essential and Fragrant Oils – some may find that this ingredient makes their skin red and break out, causing it to be really sensitive.

Silicones –  It blocks the absorption of the other ingredients and dehydrates your skin.

Drying alcohol – Strips your skin and dries out the oils – which are commonly found in acne products and is damaging to your skin.

Your sunscreen is literally your first line of defence when it comes to sun protection. Slather on Drunk Elephant’s Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense ($48) to protect your skin from the Sun’s harmful UV rays. Available at Sephora.

Chemical screens – “Sunscreen is obviously very important,” says Tiffany Masterson. “Sometimes when you’re breaking out and you don’t know the reason why, it’s good to eliminate the chemical screens in favour of physical screens.”

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – It strips the oils and can be pretty harsh on your skin.

Fragrance – “It’s not necessary. It’s just there to make the product smell better but it doesn’t do any good to your skin.”

The right technique for applying Drunk Elephant’s products to your face.

We won’t say that there’s a wrong way of applying products to your face. However, there is actually, a recommended method for applying Drunk Elephant’s line of products where “mixing is the new layering”.

Think of Drunk Elephant products like ingredients that you mix with your smoothie. Instead of going with one product at a time, Tiffany Masterson advises us to mix the cream along with your serum, oil or sunscreen, before applying it on your skin at one go! Trust us, it’s that easy.
