LUNA 2 vs LUNA mini 2: Which Facial Cleansing Device To Get?

After months of overindulgence, the start of a new year calls for a new list of resolutions. We all know how it goes, we set our resolutions at the start of every year and then by the end of January, or at least February, they’ll all be long forgotten. Whether it’s eating healthier, exercising more or even starting on that one thing that you’ve been procrastinating about for the longest time — we all want to be better versions of ourselves from the year before. So if you’re in need of new ideas for your list of resolutions that are probably worth keeping to, we have just the thing for you — in terms of skincare at least.

Enter into the new year with better and brighter skin. As we start to age, we tend to experience a plethora of issues that we face with our skin. From fine lines and wrinkles hitting us in our 20s or 30s to age-related acne even in our adult years — the list of problems that we face never ends. So if you’re finding ways on how to take better care of your skin in the new year, we suggest trying the revolutionary brushes from FOREO’s line of cleansing devices that are suited to give you the best skin that you could ever ask for.

You’ve probably heard of the LUNA mini 2 circling ’round the net; with a ton of YouTube reviews from your favourite beauty gurus to influencers posting a ton of selfies for the ‘gram talking about the product. On top of that, the NYLON team also did a review about these gizmos in our previous post for FOREO’s LUNA mini 2 which revealed some interesting results after using it for a week. However, this time ’round, we’re trying something a little more different from FOREO and it’s none other than their LUNA 2 facial cleansing device set. And to our surprise, the results were pretty legit. Read on to find out how these devices differed from one another.

FOREO LUNA 2

FOREO LUNA 2 (L — R): Normal Skin, Combination Skin, Oily Skin, Sensitive Skin, $319 each. Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

In comparison to the previous LUNA brush by FOREO, the LUNA 2 is built with 12 power settings to give double the T-sonic power with approximately 8,000 T-sonic pulsations per minute. It also comes with a new optimised design with a head that’s 50% bigger than the former for a more efficient cleanse and facial. In addition, the brush also has a unique silicone design that features softer touch points and a nonporous surface that resists bacteria buildup that’s commonly found in other facial cleansing brushes.

Designed to give a customised cleansing experience for the different skin types, the LUNA 2 brushes come in 4 types of brushes; namely, for Normal, Combination, Oily and Sensitive skin. If you’re unsure of which skin type you fall into, we suggest taking the short quiz available on FOREO’s website!

For Combination Skin (Blue)
FOREO LUNA 2 for Combination Skin ($319). Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

Made with a combination of fine and thick bristles, this FOREO LUNA 2 brush is best paired with a mild cream or lotion based cleanser for combination skin.

For Normal Skin (Pink)
FOREO LUNA 2 for Normal Skin ($319). Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

Cleansers that work best for normal skin would usually contain ingredients such as AHA and BHA, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, witch hazel and spirulina. For the best cleansing experience, look out for these ingredients in your cleanser and work it through with this pink LUNA 2 brush.

For Sensitive Skin (Purple)
FOREO LUNA 2 for Sensitive Skin ($319). Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

When working with sensitive skin, it’s always important to use things that are gentle on the skin — because irritating your skin and giving it more acne problems would be the last thing you’d ever want to happen when you’re trying to fix your skin. We also recommend using a soap-free cleanser that’s gentle and hydrating on your skin.

For Oily Skin (Green)
FOREO LUNA 2 for Oily Skin ($319). Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

Dealing with oily skin can be tricky at times, especially when you’re living in Singapore’s tropical climate. To tackle and fix your skincare woes, try this LUNA 2 brush that’s especially catered for oily skin. The brush comes with broader touch-points for you to work with to deeply cleanse your pores.

Most importantly, the brush differs from the LUNA mini 2, mainly because of its built-in anti-wrinkle mode. The difference: It’s ergonomically designed with curved ridges on the back of the device that helps deliver lower-frequency pulsations for you to massage wrinkle-prone areas with.

FOREO LUNA mini 2

FOREO LUNA mini 2 ($225) available in 6 colours (L – R): Aquamarine, Fuchsia, Black, Pearl Pink, Sunflower Yellow, Black. Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

The FOREO LUNA mini 2, in comparison to the LUNA 2, is a smaller device that comes in a wider range of colours — well, 6 colours to be exact. Apart from that, these devices are more travel-friendly and would fit really well in your travel pouch for you to bring it on your monthly travels.

As for the back of the brushes, the LUNA mini 2 features an entire panel of thick touchpoints for you to work with along your T-zones. It’s especially useful if you have extremely oily skin or if you’re trying to remove the remaining gunk of makeup if you find yourself wearing a full face every day. Another difference to note about the FOREO LUNA mini 2 is that it comes with 8 power settings instead of 12, like the FOREO LUNA 2 device.

OUR REVIEW

FOREO LUNA 2 for Normal Skin. Available at FOREO, TANGS, and Sephora.

I was, or maybe still am, sceptical about using facial cleansing brushes during my skincare regime. Imparting something new to your usual routine can sometimes be a little daunting. What if I give my skin more problems than it already has? Nonetheless, my curiosity to try new things never once stopped me from still trying them.

My first experience with the FOREO LUNA mini 2 was, thankfully, a great and pleasant one. I was really impressed with its design and how it actually worked really well on my skin, considering the fact that I had a really bad experience with facial cleansing brushes in the past.

So when the LUNA 2 brush came out, I was really psyched to try it — most notably, it was because of the unique anti-ageing mode that came with it (Not that I had any ageing problems to worry about; but hey prevention’s always better than cure isn’t it?)

Of course, to truly understand how the product fared on me, I knew I had to put it to the test — of which I did for one week. I used the FOREO LUNA 2 brush for normal skin and religiously cleansed my skin day and night to make sure I gave a fair review.

As an avid user of things skincare, I now see the difference that the brush has on my skin. I totally agree with the fact that the cleansing brush covers more area of my skin and it was undoubtedly, more powerful than the FOREO LUNA mini 2. I could feel that the pulsations that the device emitted was stronger and it gave a really nice and deep cleanse for my skin without it drying my skin out. I particularly enjoy using the brush with a gentle cleanser so that it gives a gentle cleanse that also hydrates my skin.

As for the anti-ageing mode, I used it while I was applying my usual serums at night so as to enhance the efficacy of the product. Despite having to try it for a week, I couldn’t exactly see the difference it had on my skin. Although, I have to agree that it did help the product absorb faster, which is a definite plus in my books considering how long it takes for some serums to work into your skin. One of the other downsides is that it’s a little more troublesome in terms of cleaning it up — you know, the hassle of washing it and cleaning it after each use — which I won’t say is much of a hassle to deal with to deter me from getting the LUNA 2 brush.

My final take: Unlike the LUNA 2, the FOREO LUNA mini 2 brushes are great if you’re just starting out or if you’re genuinely curious to find out about how these FOREO cleansing devices work. However, if you’re willing to spend and go the extra mile for better, clearer skin, I’d highly recommend you to get the LUNA 2 brush. I really love the fact that it’s customised for the different skin types and it also gives a deeper cleanse. On top of that, it makes a great addition to any skincare routine especially if one of your major skincare concerns involve dealing with fine lines and wrinkles.
