Do you know what we love? Makeup. And animals. But is it possible to love them together at the same time? The answer is: yes! With a sprinkle of consumer consciousness and some searching, you can totally find cruelty-free options out there. For you makeup fiends who are also animal friends, we’ve gone ahead and compiled some of our favourite cruelty-free brands.
What is Cruelty-Free?
Cruelty-free generally refers to products or activities that do not involve processes that harm or kill animals. In the beauty industry, cruelty-free means that a brand, their affiliates and suppliers do not test their products or ingredients on animals.
Fenty Beauty
We all know and love Rihanna, and her makeup brand that took the world by storm when it launched in 2017. Fenty Beauty has since become a mainstay in makeup bags across the world, from their revolutionary range of 40 foundation shades and killer highlighters, to the most EXTRA glitter pom pom and lipsticks loaded with pigment.
Fenty fans (all of us, basically!) will be glad to know that Fenty, as well as their affiliates and suppliers, does not test on animals! Their products do not retail in China where animal testing is compulsory.
Verdict:
Cruelty-free: Yes!
Vegan: Not completely – some products contain animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax and carmine. According to the Fenty FAQ, the following products are vegan: “Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, Match Stix Matte Skinsticks, Invisimatte Blotting Powder, Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, and our Brushes & Tools.”

Colourpop
If you want beauty on a budget and bang for your buck, Colourpop is the way to go. The cult favourite brand is well-known for their affordably priced, yet good quality products. Don’t even get us started on their HUGE range of items — whichever lip formula you’re dreaming of, Colourpop has it. Thinking of a wild eyeshadow shade? Colourpop has made it, and then some. Blushes, brushes, they have it all.
Best of all, Colourpop is proudly cruelty-free, stating on their website that “We are extremely proud to be cruelty free! No outside company tests on animals for us and none of our suppliers test on animals.”

Milk Makeup
We are obsessed with MILK Makeup’s entire cool-girl, effortless aesthetic. All their products are sleek and convenient, we especially love their distinctive fat scroll-up tubes seen on the likes of their Blur Sticks, Cooling Water and Lip + Cheeks, to name a few. MILK Makeup’s products are both cruelty-free and vegan, made with good-for-you, yummy ingredients like mango butter and matcha that will leave your skin happy. They declare on their website that they do not test products or ingredients on animals, neither do they retail in countries that mandate animal testing.
