Interview: DJ Martin Garrix Talks About “Summer Days” And His Upcoming Singapore Performance

Hitting the decks at ULTRA Singapore 2019 is none other than the international phenomenon himself, Martin Garrix. The 23-year-old Dutch protege first made headlines with the debut of his hit single ‘Animals’ back in 2014, which has now garnered over 1.2 billion views on YouTube — while clinching the top spot on charts in countries like the UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain and more. With the raw intensity and passion that this young legend belts out, it comes as no surprise that the globally acclaimed DJ has gained the likes of other DJs like Hardwell, Afrojack, Alesso and Calvin Harris, to name a few. Not to mention, he’s also played in major music festivals like Tomorrowland, Coachella and ULTRA Music Festival in Miami too.

Besides, have you seen the EDM prodigy spinning in high school when he was only 14? I didn’t see myself fist pumping when I was 14, but if I knew I attended the same school as Martin Garrix, my life as a prepubescent teen would’ve been a lot more eventful than it originally was.

Martin Garrix is set to perform at ULTRA Singapore 2019 — happening from the 8th to 9th June 2019 at the ULTRA Park.

Ahead of ULTRA Singapore’s recent Phase 2 Lineup that recently dropped, we interviewed Martin Garrix and asked him more about his new track featuring Patrick Stump and Macklemore, his thoughts on his future collaborations and his views about his upcoming ULTRA Singapore 2019 performance.

HIS INSPIRATION BEHIND “SUMMER DAYS” — HIS NEW TRACK WITH MACKLEMORE AND PATRICK STUMP.

“I wanted to make a track that makes you want to get into your car and blast it with the windows down on a hot summer day. Macklemore and Patrick’s musical styles both differ a lot from mine which makes this track so diverse and different to anything I’ve ever done before.”

HIS MUSICALITY AND HIS THOUGHTS ON EXPLORING DIFFERENT GENRES

When asked about how he has evolved in terms of his musicality over the years, Martin Garrix explains, “I’ve learned a lot the past years of course. I’ve also worked with lots of amazing people who have learned me a lot. I always want to keep improving myself and love to work with other people, it gives me inspiration.”

Now, we’re no stranger to his fist-pumping and heart-thumping progressive/dutch house tracks that he’s well-known for in the EDM scene but what about the other genres like future bass, big room house and electro? Will he be branching out to newer genres in the near future? Well, during the interview, the Dutch DJ himself said, “Absolutely! I’m open to working with artists from all different kinds of genres. Unexpected combinations can be the best sometimes.” Just look at his previous collabs with other globally acclaimed DJs like Afrojack, Dillion Francis, Hardwell, and not to mention, his recent track with Patrick Stump and Macklemore.

We’re not too sure which genres he’ll be exploring next but we’re definitely keeping our eyes peeled for what’s to come in the near future.

“I would love to work with Pharrell Williams and Shawn Mendes. Billie Eilish would also be really cool.”

THE CURRENT EDM SCENE

On the topic of collaborating with the other various artists, Martin Garrix also shares with us of what he thinks of the current EDM scene — especially with the progression and direction of the music in today’s generation. “I think it’s still going strong and still expanding and growing in lots of countries.”

MOST MEMORABLE FESTIVAL

“That’s a difficult question because I play some of the most amazing shows on a weekly basis. But in terms of festivals, it’s of course always great to play ULTRA, Lollapalooza, Coachella etc.”

ON SINGAPORE AND HIS UPCOMING ULTRA SINGAPORE PERFORMANCE

“Yes, I wasn’t there too long ago for the F1. Singapore is a beautiful country with amazing nature. I can’t wait to be back there to perform for everyone, and of course, we are preparing something special.”
