Who Were The Happiest Campers At The MET Gala 2019?

It’s MET Gala SZN— gorgeous gowns, avant garde looks are splashed all over our Instagram and Twitter feeds, IG Live and Stories, and we couldn’t be happier! This year’s theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion” might be a little unfamiliar. While talking to Evening Standard, Andrew Bolton, the MET gala curator, posited that we should expect outfits that are “playful, extravagant and adventurous.”, and said that he was hoping for “more Cher-like Bob Mackie moments or Bjork-laying-an-egg moments.”

There are only two “camps” here: those we killed it and those who didn’t. Here are some of our top picks for who served a look that was stunning and on-point for the theme.

Cara Delevingne

Props to Cara Delevingne for daring to rock this kitschy look! In the midst of safe gowns and safe neutral colours, Cara went all out in this sheer outfit with thin rainbow stripes, flaunting a wonderfully ridiculous headpiece. With the matching rainbow cane, she looked like a funky, candy-cane android from the future and we are eating it up!

Zendaya

Bippidi-boppity-YAS, BOO!! Zendaya dressed in Tommy Hilfiger as a campy Disney princess was so magical, we wouldn’t be surprised if she inspired more Disney live action remakes! She was adorable on the red carpet with her stylist, Law Roach, as he completed her look by assuming the role of Fairy Godmother— wand and spell-casting and all. The fact that the dress lit up was all the more exciting: definitely fits the more is more aspect of camp.

Celine Dion

The Canadian icon is well-known as a queen of camp already, and she certainly delivered! The singer sported a showgirl-esque look, with dripping fringe and a dramatic headpiece of wire and feathers.

Katy Perry

While SIA has sung about swinging from a chandelier, Katy went one step ahead and BECAME one! Camp for sure, this look is out there and full of drama. And of course it’s Moschino, well known for campy and super extra, larger-than-life designs. We love the details in the look, like the collar and the bright candles. Literally, very lit!

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson’s look was dark and edgy, with a cohesive overall theme. Even the choices of material, like the latex, long ponytail, play into the S&M, fetishy tone of the outfit so well. The sky-high chunky platform juxtaposed by the sharp, pointed heel of the shoe made Thompson look like a scary, fashion-forward scorpion.

Janelle Monáe

A giant peeper framed by huge fringe eyelashes? A sun hat stack? Janelle Monáe and Christian Siriano absolutely killed this look. The proportions of the look, with a cinched waist and ballooning skirt, were super flattering on the singer, and the bold colourblocked lines were artful, reminiscent of pop art and Picasso.

Billy Porter

Another winner here is none other than Billy Porter. His Christian Siriano tuxedo gown at the 2019 Oscars won our hearts for sure, so we know he can serve a look! His entrance was show-stopping as he was carried in by six Broadway actors, sprawled across a black velvet couch, absolutely dripping in gold.

On the red carpet he flaunted metallic gold, 10-foot wings sprouting from his catsuit sparkling with jewels, topped off with a dramatic headpiece. Yes, yes and yes! Camp is extravagant and over-the-top, and Billy Porter looked divine.

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean’s Instagram picture of his MET look is captioned, “F— a theme!” Dressed in Prada, a black suit and black windbreaker, Ocean is serving airport security realness. At the Gala, he pulled out a camera and started snapping at the paparazzi. Some might think it’s a cop-out, but we think it’s camp— a satirical take on a glitzy press-filled event.

Ezra Miller

We don’t really know what to say, because Ezra Miller absolutely murdered the red carpet. He looked amazing in this decidedly campy, androgynous Burberry look. The black and white suit was reminiscent of Beetlejuice, and the diamanté corset was to die for (we wish we had one!), cinching his waist beautifully. Huge kudos to the makeup team for the mind-boggling makeup illusion of three other pairs of eyes. And of course, the literal face mask was a touch of detailed genius.

Jared Leto

Jared Leto certainly turned heads with a decapitated wax model of… Well, his own head. In a decadent silk red gown draped with bedazzled lengths of diamantés, this is really quite a look. And given that he came as Jesus Christ the year before, we know Jared Leto knows how to make a statement.

Lady Gaga

The brilliant Lady Gaga never fails to impress, and her stunning entrance was unlike any other. Not only did she serve four delightful Brandon Maxwell outfits, she outdid herself and married fashion with performance as she gradually stripped down to bejewelled lingerie.

Each quirky performance was brought to life by the talented queen that Gaga is, with her fully immersed in the eccentric characters she portrayed.

Hats— and clothes— off to Lady Gaga.

Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning’s Miu Miu look was just too fun not to include! Bright orange colours— super summery and eye-catching. As if the layers and layers of chains weren’t enough, she had an insane manicure with a different charm on every. Single. Finger! These charms included Colgate toothpaste and French fries— weird and disparate, but we love it. As one of her huge necklaces spelled out, “CAMP”! We agree.
