NikkieTutorials Tells Us How She Got Started As A Makeup Artist, Snoop Dogg, And Marc Jacobs Beauty

We’re not surprised — some women can do a full face of makeup in a matter of minutes while the others find it hard to even score a winged look. When stuck in such a situation, it comes as second nature for us to look over to beauty gurus, like NikkieTutorials, on YouTube to figure out our look, learn the right techniques and garner more inspiration to score the perfect makeup look that’ll have everyone turning heads.

Most famously known by her YouTube moniker, NikkieTutorials, Nikkie De Jager, is no stranger to the YouTube committee — and she’s undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. Followers who’ve long been following the beauty icon are pretty much familiar with how bubbly and bold she can be and that’s exactly what we love the most about her.

We sat down with Nikkie during her stop here in Singapore earlier this week to know more about what inspires her, her Snoop Dogg collaboration, and her appointment as Global Artistry Advisor for Marc Jacobs Beauty.

WHEN SHE FIRST STARTED WITH MAKEUP

Nikkie De Jager, aka NikkieTutorials, in her first makeup tutorial back in June, 2008. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/b6ogMySncbY

“I started using makeup when I was 14. It all happened when I started my channel. Well, it was my first time I wore makeup like a serious thing. Before it was just mascara, lip gloss, but now, we’re doing this. So I was 14.”

HER FIRST INSPIRATION

“Well, I think a lot of people would say their mom, but for me, since I started doing makeup for my channel, I think the first woman who really showed me how was Sandy Gold.”

Check out Sandy Gold’s “Wake Up And Make Up” tutorial inspired by Lauren Conrad. Watch the full tutorial here: https://youtu.be/EA4nO1VpaFY

“She was a celebrity makeup artist and she did a video on how to do a Lauren Conrad eyeliner from ‘The Hills‘ and I think she was the first influencer in my life to be like “Ok, this is what you’re doing, this is how it has to be done” So probably my mom and Sandy Gold.”

THE EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY

“Oh, it has become a lot more. Like a lot more makeup. I love it because for so long I had to make my point and prove that makeup was fine. When you look on the streets there are like highlighters, bright colours of lipstick, blushes — makeup is so much more accepted now, that it makes me really proud. So I think, in itself, it has become a lot more.”

HER PARTNERSHIP WITH MARC JACOBS BEAUTY

Nikkie de Jager as Marc Jacobs Beauty’s first-ever Global Artistry Advisor

“I wanted to partner with Marc Jacobs Beauty because they understand. It’s really rare and uncommon to find a brand that understands how we can help each other, where our strongest points are, and where we can really thrive.”

“The biggest point that got to me was when they came up with the Snoop Dogg collab. I never even thought of that. Like when it came to me I was like ‘Oh my god, you guys are brilliant!” and that’s when I knew I was at the right place. They just get it.”

HER FIRST MARC JACOBS BEAUTY PRODUCT

Nikkie used her favourite Marc Jacobs Highliner (“Pink of Me”) in her most recent video featuring Snoop Dogg. Watch the full tutorial here: https://youtu.be/8ZJgeL1Qs_Y

“The Highliner. So this was my favourite, it’s called ‘Pink Of Me’. I pop that on my waterline to open up the eye for a more brighter and awake look. It’s the first product I’ve tried at first. I tried it on my hand and it stayed there for 2 days because it’s so waterproof, I’m like “Okay this is never coming off!” So if you want something to last the heat, or just life, then these are insane.”

HER BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

“Highliner. These are incredible because they last. I want all my makeup — because you put in so much love and effort into it — you want it to last. So I think these are great.”

“And this Accomplice concealer. This to me, is like “Photoshop in a bottle”. The magic behind it is it’s a cream product, and usually you can’t put creams on top of powders, but this one you can. So if you have a little spot coming out throughout the day, you can pop this on and set it with the Accomplice powder and you’re set. It’s like FaceTune, it’s perfect. So those two are a must. Not too heavy, but full coverage which I love.”

HOW MARC JACOBS BEAUTY HAS SHAPED HER BEAUTY ROUTINE

“I think every time you try new products from any brand, it changes your routine once you find a product that really hits the spot. To me, it just became more of an adventure. So at first, before Marc Jacobs, before any other product, it was like “I’m using this now, I’m using that now,” but now you feel it’s a luxury brand. So now when you pop it on, it really sets you into the mood, like a bathrobe, “I’m drawing the glamour, I’m doing it all”. So I feel like, it gets you in that mood and something that gets you in that mood is something that’s so special to me.”

WHAT SHE LOVES FROM THE ACCOMPLICE COLLECTION

“The concealer, in four words — ‘FaceTune In A Bottle’. It is incredible. It is so flawless. It creates a perfect canvas. The powders are really great too because they have a blurring effect. So, whenever on camera, I take this powder and pop it on my porous areas and I look like I have a filter on. It’s incredible.”

Marc Jacobs Beauty O!mega Shadow Gel Powder Eyeshadow in Bravo-O! ($42). Available at Sephora and online at sephora.sg

“This is also another secret that I don’t tell a lot of people. The Omega Shadow Gel Powder called Bravo-O!. Now a little trick, and Pat McGrath taught me this, this is like a Bronzy Shimmer Shade, so whenever you do a smokey eye and your transition looks a little “ergh”, you pop this on and because of the shimmer, it’s going to fade it out and you’ll have a blend that is FaceTune-d perfection.”

WHAT MAKES THE ACCOMPLICE COLLECTION SPECIAL

“It’s special because you can pop it on whatever. So if your skin is wet, dry, semi-matte — it just goes with everything. And I feel like it’s perfect that you don’t need a lot. It’s perfect on no makeup skin. So if you have a bare face and you have a couple of spots and you want to hide it — all you need to do is to tap it on, and it goes with everything.”

HER SECRET MAKEUP TIPS

“I love using bronzer on the eyes to sculpt.”

Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter in Dew You? ($69)(left) and Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Prime Epic Lash Primer ($44)(right). Available at Sephora and online at sephora.sg

“The Dew Drops as well. A couple of drops in your foundation for that glow. This is really glowy so only pop like one drop in your foundation and it’s going to give you that glow.

Oh, and I have another one. The lash primer — on the brows as a brow setter.”

WHERE SHE GETS IDEAS FOR HER BEAUTY VIDEOS

“Oh my god, I wonder. I don’t even know. Well, you just have to look around a lot. You know you have to see what’s popular, you have to see what the people are talking about. And you always have to keep pushing yourself. I think that the biggest sort of risk for any creator is that you get comfortable. So like, whenever you do a video, and it does really well, and you’re like “Ok, let me do 10,000 of these because they do really well”. So you always have to challenge yourself, come up with new things. I don’t know how I do it but I’ve got a good team around me that helps me every now and then. But essentially, it’s looking around and being open to it — because if you block it off, you’ll never get something new. So look around and take it all in.”

WHY EVERYONE LOVES NIKKIETUTORIALS

“I think they like that I’m me, that I’m real about stuff. I think it’s so important to be open and honest with your following because you know they follow you for a reason and they see something in you. And I think it’s so important, on a day-to-day basis when I feel down, that I let them know, or for example this trip, we’re in Singapore, after this we’re going to Sydney, then to Seoul, and last week I was stressed out! Like how was I going to do this? So I told my followers, I can only upload once, and I felt so bad about it. But there are people that are like “Girl, what? Chill, you’re travelling the world, we’re okay.” And as long as you’re open and honest about how you’re feeling, you’re alright.”

THE LATEST MARC JACOBS BEAUTY SKINCARE LINE

The new Youthquake moisturiser ($78) from Marc Jacobs Beauty. Available at Sephora and online at sephora.sg. (Photo Courtesy: left, right)

“Yes, they have Youthquake! I first tried this at New York Fashion Week when I was doing makeup for Marc Jacobs Beauty backstage which was very special and we popped this on the skin to sort of prime. So this is a moisturiser but it’s perfect as sort of that first step. It smells amazing and it’s got pineapple enzymes in it, so it lifts dead skin cells. It’s like a little dessert on your face.

So whenever you have a couple of dry spots, you pop this on, let it sink in, and it’s just perfect, and it’s really good. And a lot of people use the coconut primer as a serum too because it’s so hydrating. So those two together are like a dream.”
