Putting Time’s Best Inventions 2018 To The Test – Reviewing ACUVUE® OASYS With Transitions™

Standing under the blazing balls of fire in the sky daily, we run the risk of nasty sunburns and sunspots. And for those that wear contact lenses, well, squinting be upon us. But there’s hope yet for contact lens wearers; here to better the experience is ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™.

Awarded Time’s Best Inventions 2018, this is the first-ever transition contact lenses that quickly adapts to the indoor and outdoor light entering the eye — and includes filtering blue light and blocking harmful UV rays, for that matter.

Who is the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ suited for?

ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™

Faithful readers of Nylon would know this is not the first time we address the many merits of UV protection. While we often follow the cardinal rules of applying sunscreen or shielding ourselves with sun-safe clothing options, we tend to overlook one glaring issue: bright lights and sun exposure to our eyes. Believe it or not, your eyes can actually get sunburned, or in other words, photokeratitis.

Formulated specifically to reduce the stressful impact that different lighting conditions can have on your eyes, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ contact lenses provides soothing vision all day long.

Another plus point: reducing halos and starbursts at night — providing a sharper and clearer vision for night activities such as driving. Attributed to their Transitions™ Light Intelligent Technology™, the lenses react by adjusting seamlessly to different light conditions to best suit your needs.

When does the lens activate?

Built for an active lifestyle, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ activates in both indoor and UV light. Users love that these bi-weekly contact lenses are suited for modern outdoor activities, such as clubbing and sport hobbies, so it makes a perfect canvas for achieving clearer vision… day or night. Fun fact: Your vision remains clear even when the lenses are activated and adapting to different lighting conditions!

Designed for your ultimate convenience, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ comes in handy, especially when dealing with instances that sunglasses are uncomfortable or can’t even be worn. Think: competing in a marathon or driving at night.

Soothing vision, fast reacting, and the highest level of UV protection in contact lenses to boot, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ is also available in zero degrees for those that do not require vision correction.

How does it look on the eye?

So here’s the thing — give these lenses the respect it deserves as a piece of technology. During my contact lens fitting at Optics Premier @ Centrepoint, I was excited for its claim of the highest level of protection from UV and blue light filtering — music to the ears of us that experienced harsh squinting due to the bright lights and staring at screen monitors all day.

If you must know, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ won me over with its quick adaptation to the light, so much so that I couldn’t “see” the lens adjusting its shade (I seriously thought I would notice a difference… like a filter covering my eyes). The transition was seamless and fast.

Just as the name suggests, the lenses got darker when exposed to the sunlight. As I have naturally dark brown eyes, the ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ didn’t tint my eye colour. Translation: they look just like my eyes, only protected. As I attempted to take a selfie, I realised I squinted less under the pesky UV rays and my far sight vision was slightly clearer as compared to when I didn’t have them on.

If you’re anything like me, you’re staring at a computer screen for most of your day and probably used to rubbing or squinting your eyes.  While I like to think that I’m doing the most for my skin (read: dry office skin), invisible problems like blue light pollution towards my eyes may be challenging to prevent, but camouflage is made possible with these contact lenses and their ability to filter out blue light. Having worn the lenses for almost a week, I’m inclined to credit the reduction in digital eye strain to my new ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™.

ACUVUE® set out to remedy a common UV protection problem by creating a contact lens that adapts to changing light  — and lo’ and behold, they’ve done it. Consider me impressed.
