In a nostalgic tribute to the ‘90s, Melissa and Opening Ceremony are collaborating on a collection of shoes inspired by the mostly iconic, and sometimes cringe-worthy fashion staples of the era. With key trends like jelly sandals, mules and logomania making appearances in a big way in this collection, it is safe to say the ‘90s are inescapable.

If you recognise the locations of this shoot, it’s because it was shot in Singapore. Captured on film, the locations for this campaign were the iconic and beloved Golden Mile Complex and Chinatown amongst others. They were specifically chosen to highlight the old school / ’90s vibes.

The campaign also highlights the quirkiness of the two brands.  Melissa’s original Aranha shoes were inspired by the sandals worn by fishermen which surprisingly became an instant hit and a symbol of the young Brazilian woman. Opening Ceremony also enjoys a cultish following. The brand is known for its long list of celebrity collaborations and is a notable brand within the streetwear scene.

This season, the Melissa / Opening Ceremony collection is introducing three brand new styles: the Hatch, the Ladii and the Flipp. The collection is bright and bold with a mix of colour blocking and unexpected textural twist in the form of the fisherman netting. If you’re stumped on how to style them, you can turn to some classic ’90s movies like Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless for some inspiration. Is this sign that you should rewatch 10 Things I Hate About You this long weekend? Yes, yes it is.

The Hatch is a hybrid of those jelly sandals of that decade and the fisherman netting-inspired design that Melissa began with. The shoes look great over a pair of colourful pair of socks. As the material is translucent, we recommend going all out and pairing these sandals with kitschy printed socks.

The Ladii is in the style of mules with block heels and translucent detailings. These have grown-up vibes from the classic and feminine silhouette of the shoes, but also have a hint of that playfulness that characteristic of jelly shoes. We think the Ladii, especially the neutrals ones, will look great with a silky slip dress.

Lastly, there is the Flipp which comes in the trendy slides silhouette that have been popular for a while now. You can choose from either a fisherman netting design or a logomania style. This is definitely the most versatile pair of the three, so we say go ahead and experiment with as many styles as you can.

Each style also features Melissa’s signature vegan and 100% recyclable plastic material, MELFLEX™. This innovative material brings flexibility, resistance and comfort to the feet while being environmentally-friendly.
