All The Best Features Of The Google Pixel 4 That Actually Matter

With all the recent tech releases, kindly excuse our nerdery. Just a few days ago, we got a sneak preview on the upcoming Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL, and we wonder what distinguishes subpar from stellar when it comes to a new phone release.

Others might argue that it all comes down to the camera proficiency but we say there’s more to it than just an ultra-wide angle lens. But first, feast your eyes on the goods, below.

This fourth-generation reveals two sizes starting at $1,119 for the 5.7-inch Pixel 4 and $1,319 for the 6.3-inch Pixel 4XL, which delivers and an OLED display with 90Hz refresh rates. There’s also a new Google Assistant enabled, so for those already familiar with the ecosystem, things like sending texts and setting reminders are just a “hey Google” away.

The phone will be available in three colours — Just Black, Clearly White and the limited edition Oh So Orange.

The $1,199 question: should you delve deep into your salary when the phone launches on 24 October? Here’s the lowdown on our favourite features.

Motion Sense

This nifty feature is pretty self-explanatory. Called Quick Gestures, when enabled, simply wave your hand in front of the sensor. You can even reverse the direction (left-to-right or right-to-left) of the gesture! This motion sense includes changing songs and silencing the alarms hands-free and detecting when your hand comes within range; lighting up the lock screen and displaying the time and other notification icons.

Dual Exposure Controls

Imagine trying to take a photo but the background is too glaring/backlit and the subject is overshadowed. Or, you’re trying to take a shot with the sun setting behind you. With the dual exposure controls, you can adjust the highlights and shadows to improve the lighting conditions. Essentially, you can tweak the overall exposure before hitting the shutter key.

Dual Lens + Improved Camera

A testament to Google’s phone cameras, the Pixel 4 and 4XL are now furnished with 2 rear cameras, including a telephoto lens, which means Portrait Mode gives a more natural bokeh, similar to a DSLR. Combined with the Super Res Zoom software, this also allows you to take photos from far away, and then crop in, without compromising on photo quality.

If you’re wondering about the range’s already stellar Night Sight, where anything you take in a dimly-lit room is captured in detail without the flash, know that the Pixel 4 sees an improved version of this too. The powerful camera tech even lets you capture photos of the Milky Way — all in one breakthrough device.

The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL will be available at StarHub, retailers COURTS and Challenger as well as the Google Store, from 24 October.
