Review: Donburi King at Paya Lebar Quarter

It’s been slightly over a month since Donburi King opened at Paya Lebar Quarter. This restaurant is owned by the same guy who started White Curry at Millennia Walk, and they tell us that all the seafood served is airflown from Japan (except for oysters, depending on the season. The ones we ate were from Canada.) Also, the soy sauce is from Miyazaki. It’s a premium soy sauce with an intense sweetness, and heavier than regular soy sauce.

Let’s get straight to the space and food:

Above: THE SEAFOOD IS ALL FLOWN IN FROM JAPAN.

Above: THE SABA MISONI, $5 FOR 2 PIECES; A DECENT LIGHT AND TASTY SNACK TO START THE MEAL.

Above: FRIED OYSTER (HIROSHIMA, JAPAN), $5 FOR 3 PIECES; A STANDARD SIDE ORDER THAT’S GOOD FOR SHARING.

Above: THE DONBURI KING SIGNATURE KAISEN DON, $58.80; THE MUST-HAVE AND BEST-SELLER AT THIS RESTAURANT.

Above: IT INCLUDES 9 different kinds of seafood: Salmon, scallop, octopus, squid, prawns, Ikura, tobiko, uni and oyster. The seaweed is to break up the fullness of the sashimi. You can roll up the sashimi in the seaweed to make a little maki.

Above: the Ootoro Don (Daily Limited Set), $35.59; tuna belly served on rice, with everyone’s favourite avocado.

Above: Aburi Salmon Belly with Ikura Don, $23; don’t know what to eat? you can’t go wrong with this evergreen salmon don.

Above: lightly seared salmon sits on top of a bed of sushi rice, with a generous heap of ikura for added flavour and texture.
