With every festive occasion comes a flurry of launches from almost every brand in the world of beauty. This Chinese New Year, we’re expecting new designs inspired by the Year of Rat, auspicious colours, and a hoard of newly reinterpreted products from some of your favourite cult beauty brands. To get your last minute shopping started, we’ve listed some of the few launches this Chinese New Year that’s been spearheading the beauty scene for that festive makeover you’ve been yearning to try.
1. SHU UEMURA
Things are heating up! shu uemura recently dropped their unlimited flaming reds x new year limited edition collection in celebration of the Lunar New Year and all we can say is, it’s audacious, bold and oh-so-extra. In the collection, you’ll find some of the brand’s iconic lip shades, like RD163, OR570, and other trendy reds, dressed in shimmering gold for an extra pop of colour that’s versatile yet still eye-catching in the eyes of many.

2. M.A.C COSMETICS
We’re over the moon! This year, M.A.C. Cosmetics has taken things up a notch with their Lunar Illusions Collection and it has definitely left us starry-eyed… Drawing inspiration from the Forbidden City, the Lunar Illusions collection is adorned with intricate patterns of blue, pink and peach which have been heavily translated into some of their cult classics.
More excitingly, the lineup also includes their iconic Extra Dimension Skinfinish powder that comes embossed with the image of the dragon in iridescent gold! Say huat…
Prices range from $34 to $73. The Lunar New Year Collection: Lunar Illusions is now available at all M.A.C Boutiques (ION Orchard, Takashimaya S.C. Bugis Junction, NEX), selected department stores and Lazada.
3. ETUDE HOUSE
As cheesy as it sounds, this new collection by Etude House takes on the Year of the Rat quite literally with its Tom & Jerry Lucky Together Collection. Drawing inspiration from our early childhood, the collection will feature the iconic characters adorned on some of the brand’s most popular products — be it an eyebrow pencil, shadow palette, blush, lip tint and many more — that now come in limited edition shades and colours.
Prices range from $7.90 to $42.90. The Etude House Tom & Jerry Lucky Together Collection is now available at all ETUDE HOUSE stores islandwide.
4. URBAN DECAY
Picture this: you spent an hour or two on perfecting your makeup look in the morning on the first day of Chinese New Year, only to have it all smudged and smeared off by mid-day. Oh, the horror!
Though we can rely on our setting powders to set our makeup and to make sure it stays put, we certainly can’t afford it to melt away while we’re out visiting. For that extra reassurance that we all need, look over to Urban Decay’s limited-edition All Nighter Setting Spray. Bottled in its exclusive red packaging, the iconic spray from Urban Decay sets and locks your look for the next 16-hours.
To top it all off, slather on the brand’s limited-edition Vice Lip Chemistry — that’s also donned in red and gold — while giving it a dose of hydration and a tint that reacts to your lip’s pH and tone which lasts for up to 5-hours!
5. CHARLOTTE TILBURY
We’re all about making statements, no matter the occasion. But when it comes to certain occasions like Chinese New Year, we’re more drawn to bolder looks that will have heads turning ’round for a second look — and of course, nothing quite says it than a deep, sultry red just like this number by Charlotte Tilbury. A gorgeous, bold and red lipstick in the shade, Magic Red, this lipstick is also said to be formulated with anti-oxidants such as Lipstick Tree and Orchid Extract to help soften and condition the lips. Glide it onto your lips for a multi-dimensional wash of colour that’s long-lasting, yet moisturising and hydrating on your puckers.
The limited-edition Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Magic Red ($50) is now available at Sephora.
Lipsticks are not what they used to be, and I mean that in the best possible way. Take, for instance, Hourglass’ No.28 Lip Treatment Oil in the shade ‘At Night Lunar New Year‘. Transform your sad, dry, chapped lips, with this nourishing and reparative lip treatment oil formula that smoothes over your lips, while giving an alluring brick-red tint.
The Hourglass No. 28™ Lip Treatment Oil – At Night Lunar New Year (Limited Edition)($82) is now available at Hourglass counters.
We definitely see everyone flaunting this number this Chinese New Year. Glossy, red, with a hint of gold — if this isn’t extra, we don’t know what is. NARS is bringing their A-game on this Lunar New Year, with their limited-edition Chinese New Year collection that boasts an assortment of cult classics and must-have accessories that include their Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder, Afterglow Lip Balm, and Singapore Quad Eyeshadow. Not forgetting their two new collectable compact cases for Aqua Glow Cushion Foundation and Natural Radiant Longwear Cushion Foundation that’s oh-so-sleek, we’re begging for more.
If you’re all about that beautiful iridescent glow, this new festive launch might tickle your fancy. Becca has revealed their highly sought after Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter for Year of the Rat and it comes embossed with… well, you guessed it, an image of the rat!
The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector™ Pressed Highlighter – Year Of The Rat (Limited Edition)($60) is now available at Sephora.
